The department of Sociology and Social Anthropology was established in 1969. It is unique insofar as it brings together two disciplines, or two intellectual orientations, in its teaching and research. This is indeed rare in the context of Indian universities, where social anthropology is usually assigned to the Department of Anthropology.
At present, the Department has three Professors and two Readers and one Lecturer on its faculty. All the members are well-qualified and experienced with a wide range of publications in the fields of social theory, research methods, women studies, folk religion, gerontology, sociology of violence, rural social structures, Sikhism and Gandhism. The Department has devised a unique combination of field work and classroom teaching.
Latest UGC syllabi, dedicated and helpful faculty and staff, basic infrastructural facilities including a rich departmental library and a seminar room along with congenial atmosphere for research are the Departments forte.
