SGPC President to inaugurate Gurmat Sangeet Competitions
Patiala, Aug 31- Mr Avtar Singh, President of the
Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, will
inaugurate the five-day third Gurmat Sangeet
Competitions in the Kala Bhawan of Punjabi University,
Patiala on September 1 next at 4 p.m. University's
Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh will preside over the
function, being organized by the Gurmat Sangeet Chair
and Gurmat Sangeet Department of the University to
commemorate the third centenary celebrations of Guruta
Gaddi Divas. Giving this information, Dr Gurnam Singh,
HoD of Gurmat Sangeet Department, said that competitions
would be conducted in indifferent categories,
comprising individual and group shabd recital and
performances on string instruments. Patiala, Aug 28- Punjabi University's undergraduate and postgraduate supplementary examinations will start from 26th September, 2008. Giving this information Coordinator (Exams.) Dr. Gurmel Singh said that date sheet of these exams will be released soon.
Patiala, Aug 27- Punjabi University, Patiala,
wrote a glorious chapter in annals of history of
University sports by clinching for the first time the
most prestigious Maulana Abul Kalam Azad(MAKA) Trophy
for 2006-07. The coveted sports trophy is awarded to a
University having won maximum number of medals in the
All-India Inter-University Championships and by
registering overall best performance in the individual
and team events, held in one calendar year. Punjabi
University has claimed this honour by finishing in top
bracket for maximum number of times among over 400
Universities in the

NAAC Team Plants Samplings
Patiala, Aug 26- Punjabi University's campaign of making its Campus pollution-free and eco-friendly got a shot in the arm with Chairman and members of the UGC's NAAC team planting saplings of trees in the South Asian Unity Park on the University campus here today. One sapling each was planted by the panel Chairman, Prof C. Thangamuthu (Chennai) and other members, including Dr Savitha R Gandhi (Ahmedabad), Dr Y.M. Jayaraj(Gulbarga), Prof Vunnam Venkaiah(Hyderabad),and Dr Indrani Chakravarthi (Shimla).
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission which gives various levels of ranking to the Indian Universities, inter alia, on the basis of their activities, achievements in various fields. Punjabi University was given the highest of five-star ranking during five years previous to it, even as the University has made tremendous progress during the past five years. The team is here on its three-day visit to the University, its Neighbourhood and Regional Campuses from August 26 to 28 to assess and evaluate the overall performance of Punjabi University.
Interacting with the NAAC team, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh disclosed that the University has planted more than 1,000 tree saplings and 2,500 shrubs in its effort to make the Campus green and clean. "We have planned to plant at least 2,000 more saplings within the next three months, including medicinal and decorative plants", he said.
Punjabi University to spend Rs 70 lakhs on sports development
Patiala, Aug 25- Punjabi University, Patiala, has decided to spend Rs 70 lakhs on construction, renovation and refurbishing of various buildings and creating new infrastructure for the promotion of sports. This was disclosed by the University Vice- Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh, while presiding over the annual meeting of the University Sports Committee.
While giving details of the projects, Dr Jaspal Singh said that the new projects included construction of a new weightlifting hall at a cost of Rs 20 lakhs, two cushioned synthetic tennis courts costing Rs 20 lakhs and two clay court enclosures which will incur an expenditure of Rs 10 lakhs. The Gymnasium Hall will be upgraded with an eight-layered cushioned floor, equipped with finally-finished acoustics make-up which will require another about Rs 20 lakhs, he added.
Dr Jaspal Singh further said that the University sportsmen and women unleashed remarkable performance by mustering a total of 240 medals in different individual and team events in the last year's All-India Inter-University sports competitions. The tally included 145 gold, 72 silver and 23 bronze medals. Of these 132 gold, 64 silver and 21 bronze medals were grabbed in the individual events, while 13 of its teams cornered gold, eight silver and two bronze medals in the team events.
Director, Sports, Dr Raj Kumar Sharma disclosed that 17 of the University Sportspersons established new records in Cycling, Powerlifting and Weightlifting events, while seven were declared as best players. In addition to this, the University players also unleashed superb performances in various national and international level competitions. They cornered first position in the South Asian Universities Hockey Championship, held at Amritsar while representing Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Two of University athletes also pocketed silver medals in the Asian Indoor Athletics Championship and one in the South Asian Federation Games, Dr Sharma said.

ਟਾਈਮ ਦੀ ਬੱਚਤ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ। Bhai Gurcharan Singh has been awarded senior fellowship Patiala, Aug 8- Noted Sikh musician, Bhai Gurcharan Singh has been awarded senior fellowship of Rs 96,000 for the year 2008-2009 by the Punjabi University’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh to promote Gurmat Sangeet (Sikh religious music). According to Dr Gurnam Singh, HoD of Department of Gurmat Sangeet, the fellowship is given to promote academic and research work being conducted by the Department.
