In its writ petition, the Punjabi University, has brought to the notice of the court the grossviolations committed by the AIU while taking the decision. The major violationis that for awarding the trophy for the year 2009-10, no MAKA Trophy awardcommittee was constituted which consists of the eminent sportspersons asChairpersons and other members like three Olympians, three Arjuna awardees andthree Dronacharya awardees apart from Government officials.
Giving this information, Registrar of Punjabi university, Dr Manjit Singh saidthat a “false claim of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar has been accepted bythe AIU at the instance of certain high-ups. There is a rule that if any of thecontesting University submits false certificates for award of MAKA Trophy, therewill be a deduction of 20% marks and, further, for any false complaint, therewill be a further deduction of 10% marks out of the total marks. In order tofavour the GND University, Punjabi University's marks have been deducted withoutany valid reasons, Dr Singh said. Dr Manjit Singh further stated that a numberof irregularities have been committed by the AIU in order to favour the GNDU atthe instance of very high and influence persons of Sports Ministry. MAKA trophy controversy

Patiala, Aug 26- Association of IndianUniversities (AIU) has completely grossly violated norms to award Maulana AbulKalam Azad Trophy given to the best sports university in the country. PunjabiUniversity's Registrar, Dr Manjit Singh has informed the media that the AIU hassnatched Punjabi University's right to score a hat trick by winning the MAKA forthe third and fourth time in succession and by giving its verdict to share thetrophy by Punjabi University and GNDU, Amritsar.
Dr Manjit Singh said that the AIU had held a meeting on August 3 last to measurepoints for awarding the MAKA trophy for the years 2008-09 and 2009-10 and allthe universities were asked to present their cases for this. Punjabi University,he said, had pointed out many cases of bogus presentation by GNDU, Amritsar. Theallegations raised by Punjabi University included declaring the Tug of War teamof GNDU as ineligible as these were not approved by either the IOA or the SportsMinistry. Similarly, an archer Suman was declared ineligible to participate inthe Inter-University competitions. She participated in the archery team of theGNDU, whose points were wrongly added in the GNDU's tally. Thirdly, an archer,Shishupal who represented GNDU in the inter-university competition was actuallya student of Kurukshetra University. Similarly, GNDU managed to add points toits tally by including certain events which actually are not a part of rowingevent.
Dr manjit singh further said that according to rules the AIU was supposed tominus 20 per cent points for wrong representation by GNDU, Amritsar, which itdid not do. On the other hand, GNDU leveled some wrong allegations againstPunjabi University and as a rule it was mandatory to debit 10 marks from theirtally of points. Instead of doing all this, the AIU has not made any mentiontotal number of points while awarding MAKA trophy, despire repeated requests byPunjabi University. Even the committee constituted to award MAKA trophy wasunconstitutional, Dr Singh said. Punjabi University, he said, is planning to goto court to get justice.
