Badal releases two books of Dr Jaspal Singh


Patiala, July 30- Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal released two books, entitled “Sikh Virasat: Sidhant te Vihar” and “Guru Granth Sahib- The Sikh Scripture”, authored by Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala in New Delhi yesterday. While the former book contains 31 articles on various issues relating to historical and spiritual concerns of Sikhism, the latter one provides a comprehensive perspective of Guru Granth Sahib, reflecting its exclusivity as a supreme and paramount scripture. Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal was also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Parkash Singh Badal said Dr Jaspal Singh is blessed with the quality of translating, in a succinct manner, his unique vision on matters related to Sikh religion, its exceptional ethos as positioned among various religions of the world. He occupies a special and distinctive place among writers on Sikh history, culture and practices, governing its exclusive patterns of thought and philosophy, he said. Talking about his works, Dr Jaspal Singh said that the scholarly articles in both the books reveal the underpinnings of the celestial reality divulging in the process a good amount of divine manifestations. They also offer an unusual repository of universal human values with main thrust on the spiritual quest, adherence to the Divine Will, cultural and religious plurality in social existence.

Among other works of high quality, Dr Jaspal Singh has penned a large number of books and research papers. His book, “Sikh Raj da sankalp”, based on his Ph.D. thesis enjoys the status of an exceptionally rich source material among the works related to Sikh history, tradition and political wisdom.

Workshop

Patiala, June 29, 2010 - Data Security and Information Availability is a social responsibility. Protecting the Student Community and Young Generation from Unhealthy atmosphere is a major challenge to any Educational Institution or Organisation in today's Internet world. So as to promote higher education and research, educational institutes just like Universities have to provide Internet Facility to a huge user base. Accordingly, secured distribution of the facility is a serious concern. UTM's are generally put in these organisations as to check Anti Spam, Antivirus at the Gateway, to provide Firewall, IDS, Content Filtering so as to avoid bandwidth abuse, provides load balancing and maintains log books of users through a single box and that through an impressive user interface.

This workshop was organised by the Academic Staff College in collaboration with Cyberoam and University Computer Centre. Technical Experts from more than 35 different organisations took part in this workshop. Experts from the Cyberoam Company demonstrated the might of their UTM. Also, they provided awareness on Surfing Pattern and Internet Usage at College, Internet attacks-phising, hacking, spamming etc. The Vice Chancellor Dr. Jaspal Singh stressed upon that the if ethical values are suitably set in users then also the security is possible. He preached that the philosophies of Great Saints is imperative. He also stressed upon that the Cyber Crime can be avoided through human intuition and gut-feeling.

The workshop was presided by Prof. (Dr.) Chandan Singh, Dean Research, Dr. Narinder K. Dogra, Director Academic Staff College was also present. The participants were full of praise for the academic and practical session put by experts of Cyberoam on UTM.

Sakubai" staged at pbi varsity


Patiala, July 29- “Sakubai”, play staged at Punjabi University’s Kala Bhawan last evening, exposed social evils and religious hypocrisy along with multiple exploitation of the underprivileged, especially of the women folk, by one and all in all its manifestations. The solo performance enacted by the accomplished TV actress, Sarita Joshi and directed by noted theatre director, Nadira Zaheer Babbar, was hosted by Punjabi University’s Department of Theatre and Television and North Zone Cultural Centre. The play laid bare all-prevailing social pressures and compulsions relegating the womenfolk to the lowest ebb.

Chief Guest on the occasion, Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, while describing the performance as magnificent, said that the play portrayed “many worlds on one stage” in shape of singular enactment by Sarita Joshi. It also depicted in an incredible manner the mistreatment of women doing menial jobs, irrespective of their literacy level and economic status. Real poetic justice provided a befitting finale to the play that enticed a packed audience. Dr Sunita Dhir, HopD of TTV and Mr G.S. Saroya, Director, NZCC thanked the cultural troupe ek jut which has produced the play.


 

Pbi varsity lights to be run with solar system

 Patiala, July 26- “Street lights of Punjabi University willsoon get power from the sun as these will be run based on the mechanismof solar system. The number of street lights will also be reduced to conserve as much power energy as possible and make the solar system togenerate electricity more effective and efficient.” This was stated bythe Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh while inaugurating a series ofstreet play, “Ghutde Sahahn di Kahani” on the University campus heretoday. The writer and director of the play, based on the menace ofenvironment degradation, Dr Satish Kumar Verma said that the play willbe staged thrice –a-day  daily for five days startingtoday.

                While rating Street plays as one of the most powerful means of conveying and spreading a societalmessage, Dr Jaspal Singh said that “We are also making consistentefforts in the direction of waste material and water system managementto make a proper use of waste material and put a halt to the misusewater and power supply systems.” He called upon the student community to join hands with the University’s Departments of Youth Welfare and NSSand the Punjabi University Environment Society to save environment fromfurther getting polluted. The University, he said, has already been made a smoke-free zone and the use of polythene has been reduced to minimum, in additional to planting a number of medicinal plants.

Pbi varsity holds camp for flood victims

Patiala, July 23- Keeping up its spree of organising free medical aid camps for the flood victims in villagesaround Patiala, Punjabi University today organised its second camp atvillage Bhagwanpura. The victims, suffering from various water-borne and other diseases in the wake of heavy floods, were distributed freemedicines and other types of relief.

            While inauguratingthe camp, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh said that the Universitywould organise three more medical camps at villages Gheora, Dhanuri andBibipur. The University had earlier held its first camp at villageDharmheri on Saturday last where a large number of flood victimsthronged to avail the flood relief, he said.  Flood victims from neighbouring villages, including Sassa, Sassi, Mangtan and RamNagar joined the camp today. They were given first aid medicines andwere diagnosed for any possible diseases in the free health checkups,conducted with the help of Punjabi University’s Health Centre, NSSDepartment and Neptune Life Sciences Institute, Zirakpur, theVice-Chancellor said.

            NSS Coordinator, Dr Paramvir Singh said that villagers were made aware of fending forthemselves for minor medical problems in case medical aid is not readily available. Noted surgeon, Dr Jagbir Singh, Security officer, CaptGurtej Singh and Panchayat members of village Bhagwanpur helped inconducting the camp.

Career Awareness and Counselling

Patiala, July 22- Punjabi University’s Senior Secondary Model Schoolorganised a seminar on “Career Awareness and Counselling” for students ofClass X to XII in the ScienceAuditorium of the University here today.  Delegates of Sukrit Trust, including Mr Jaswinder Singh from Manchester, UK, Mr Babli Singh, Mr Joginder Singh, Mr Satnam Singh from New Delhiand Mr K.C. Goyal and Dr.Himmat Singh made the studentsaware about various careers options after plus-2.

Presiding over the function,Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh advised the students to maintainacademic integrity as there wasno alternative to educationand hard work. The students, he said, need to develop smartgoals and develop the qualities of inquistiveness and receptivity toachieve their cherished goals. The Vice-Chancellor also released a video CD “ Nit Nem” in Ghayan on theoccasion. Principal Mrs. S.K. Nirmal Goyal gave tips on career planning to the students and thankedthe guests.

Dr Chandan Singh appointedDean, Research

Patiala, July 11- Punjabi University’sVice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh has appointed Dr Chandan Singh,Professor in the Department of Computer Science, as Dean, Research ofthe University. Dr S.P. Singh, Professor in the Department of HumanBiology has been appointed as Additional Dean, Research of theUniversity. Both Dr Chandan Singh and Dr S.P. Singh have vast teachingand research experience, coupled with published work of high quality.While the former has served as Dean of Faculties of Engineering andTechnology and that of Physical Sciences, the latter is serving as Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences of the University.

Pbi varsity starting new course in hotel and hospitalit y management

Patiala, July 2- Punjabi University’s newlyestablished Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Hotel Management isstarting a three-year B.Sc. course in Hospitality and Hotel Managementfrom the forthcoming academic session. According to its Director, DrS.M. Verma, the eligibility for the course has been kept as seniorsecondary in any stream with minimum of 45 per cent marks. Thethree-year course will be divided into six semesters and will comprisesuch components as food production, food and beverage service, frontoffice, chef, hotel engineering etc.

            Talking about theimportance of the course, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh said that“India is fast emerging as one of the best tourism destinations in theworld even as its hospitality industry is projected to grow at a rate of 8.8 per cent. Given these facts, India is emerging as the biggestemployment generators in the area of tourism, hotel and hospitalitymanagement. We have decided to start this course to generate maximumemployment to our students, he said.”

            Dr Verma said theMinistry of Tourism is devoted to facilitate the running of coursescovering tourism and hospitality management and that “we have alreadyapproached the concerned department in the ministry to allocate grant to the tune of Rs two crore.

Dr Tiwana appointed Dean,Academic Affairs

Dr S.S. Tiwana, Professor in the Department of Public Administration, took over as new Dean, Academic Affairs ofPunjabi University here today. Dr Tiwana has an illustrious academiccareer, having published more than 80 research papers and guided 12candidates to get their doctorate degrees. He has been awarded with thetitles of “Man of the Year” by the American Biographic Institute,California and Vizya Shree by the India International Society for hisdistinguished contribution in the field of public Administration.Presently, he is the Vice-President of Indian Public AdministrationAssociation and that of Indian Political Science Association. A formerHead of the Public Administration Department, Dr Tiwana has done hisresearch work with special focus on federalism and centre-staterelations.
