Indian media warrants matching accountibility: VC

Patiala, March 26---Pithy comment of Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala, that the Indian media had blossomed as a powerful entity, warranting a matching accountability, generated a heated debate among eminent media personalities on how the presentation of news in the print and electronic media could be made unadulterated and objective?

      Presiding over the valedictory session of the three-day national seminar on ‘Challenges and Opportunities Before Indian Media’, organized by Punjabi University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication here today, the Vice-Chancellor raised the question that if the consumers expected that even the toothpaste should be an ‘unadulterated and standardized’ product, why should not they be expected to be supplied unadulterated and factual information by the media?

     Dr Jaspal singh further said that despite being a powerful network, the media was not reflecting a pan-India scene and instead was leaving the country’s peripheral areas uncovered and ignored. He was responding to the observations of Mr H.K Dua, Editor-in-Chief of The Tribune Group of Newspapers, that the mainstream media rarely gave a healthy coverage to the underprivileged while focusing on such issues like killings and ambush of security forces.

     Referring to observation of Prof B.K Kuthiala, Head of Department of Mass Communication and Media Technology, Kurukshetra University that media was an extension of intra-personal dialogue, the Vice Chancellor said it was an integral part of the human existence and it could be established with the self or within the person as per the Indian spiritual traditions.

      Talking in the same vein, Punjabi Tribune’s Editor, Mr Sidhu Damdami, said that the India media had become too powerful necessitating an immediate regulatory mechanism to control it before it causes intolerable damage to the society. And this realization among the people, he said, has become more pronounced following the live coverage of the terrorist attack in Mumbai which exceeded all the limits of fair reporting while bordering around sensationalism. Such a mechanism, however, was a ticklish issue since any such dispensation would be opposed by the media on grounds of “freedom of the press’, Mr Damdami said. He, however, said that the electronic media had developed an enormous capacity to misuse and abuse the facts as these suited their business and political interests.

       Dr Gurmeet Singh Maan, Head of the Department said that we, as media consumers were over-expecting from the media while ignoring our own responsibilies. The issues raised by it seldom found favour even among its ardent and impassioned audiences. He condemned the practice of calling media as watchdogs and suggested that these should preferably be called as guardians of the society. In all 30 papers were presented in the seminar discussing various aspects the media scene, he said

Dilating on the suggestion of setting a Press Commission for review the entire gamut of media Prof Kuthiala said that it was yet to be decided whether media was a business, a service sector or voluntary dispensation. Media stalwarts who participated in the seminar included Dr Narinder Singh Kapoor, Prof Gulzar Singh Sandhu, Prof Radhey Shyam Sharma, Prof Ashok Ogra, Dr Vikram Dutt, Prof TDS Alok, Dr Ashutosh Mishra and Prof Avinash Singh. The seminar reached its climax with the holding of an alumni meet of the students in the Department.

ਪਟਿਆਲਾ, 26 ਮਾਰਚ- ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਯੁਵਕ ਭਲਾਈ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਲੋਂ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਕੈਂਪਸ ਦੇ ਸਪੋਰਟਸ ਕੰਪਲੈਕਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋਕ ਖੇਡਾਂ 2009 ਦਾ ਆਯੋਜਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਲੋਕ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਰੁਚੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਇਹ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਫਲਤਾਪੂਰਵਕ ਸੰਪੰਨ ਹੋਇਆ। ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਕੈਂਪਸ ਪੱਧਰ ਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਲੋਕ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਗਤ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਸ਼ਟਾਪੂ, ਗੀਟੇ ਤੇ ਰੱਸੀ ਟੱਪਣ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੰਡਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਟੀਮ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਲੂਣ ਮਿਆਣੀ, ਪਿੱਠੂ ਗਰਮ ਤੇ ਰੱਸਾਕੱਸ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਹੋਏ। ਇਹ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਯੁਵਕ ਭਲਾਈ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰ ਡਾ. ਸਤੀਸ਼ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਵਰਮਾ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਸਵਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਖੇਡ ਲੇਖਕ, ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕਜ਼ਾਕ, ਡਾ. ਪ੍ਰਭਸ਼ਰਨ ਕੌਰ, ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਗੁਰਮੀਤ ਭੱਠਲ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਮਲਜਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਜੱਜਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨਿਭਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰ ਸਪੋਰਟਸ ਡਾ. ਰਾਜ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਨੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੋਆਰਡੀਨੇਟਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ ਨਿਭਾਈ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਵਾਈਸ-ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਇਨਾਮ ਵੰਡ ਦੀ ਰਸਮ ਅਦਾ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਈ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਵਿਰਾਸਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਭਾਲਣ ਲਈ ਉੱਦਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਅਗਲੇ ਸਾਲ ਇਹ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੱਧਰ ਤੇ ਕਰਵਾਈਆਂ ਜਾਣਗੀਆਂ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਯੁਵਕ ਭਲਾਈ ਦੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਤੇ ਮਕਬੂਲ ਕਲਾਕਾਰ ਸਤਵਿੰਦਰ ਬੁੱਗਾ ਨੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਮਹਿਮਾਨ ਵਜੋਂ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਜਰੀ ਭਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੀਤਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਖਿਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਹੋਸਟਲਾਂ ਤੇ ਡੇ-ਸਕਾਲਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਭਾਗ ਲਿਆ। ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਹਨ:-

ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਸੀ ਟੱਪਣ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਸ਼ੇਰਗਿੱਲ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਦੀ ਅਮਨਜੋਤ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਸਥਾਨ, ਸਿਲਵਰ ਜੁਬਲੀ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਦੀ ਮੀਨੂ ਨੇ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਡਾ. ਅੰਬੇਦਕਰ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਦੀ ਮੋਨਿਕਾ ਨੇ ਤੀਸਰਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਸ਼ਟਾਪੂ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਸ਼ੇਰਗਿੱਲ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਦੀ ਮਨਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾ, ਡਾ. ਅੰਬੇਦਕਰ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਦੀ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਸ਼ੇਰਗਿੱਲ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਦੀ ਹਰਕੀਰਤ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਤੀਸਰਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੀਟੇ ਖੇਡਣ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚਜ ਸਿਲਵਰ ਜੁਬਲੀ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਦੀ ਮੀਨੂ ਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾ, ਮਾਤਾ ਗੁਜਰੀ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਦੀ ਮੀਨਾਕਸ਼ੀ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਸ਼ੇਰਗਿੱਲ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨੇ ਤੀਸਰਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤਾ।

ਮੁੰਡਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੂਣ ਮਿਆਣੀ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਾਬਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸਥਾਨ, ਹੋਮੀ ਭਾਭਾ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਨੇ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਭਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਨੇ ਤੀਸਰਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਪਿੱਠੂ ਗਰਮ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਾਬਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾ, ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਭਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਨੇ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਇੰਜਨੀਅਰਿੰਗ ਕਾਲਜ ਨੇ ਤੀਸਰਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੱਸਾ-ਕੱਸ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਭਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾ, ਭਾਈ ਵੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਨੇ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਬਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਹੋਸਟਲ ਨੇ ਤੀਸਰਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤਾ।

ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਜਨ-ਸੰਚਾਰ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਲੋਂ ਤਿੰਨ-ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ

ਪਟਿਆਲਾ, 24 ਮਾਰਚ- 'ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਦੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਬਰਕਰਾਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਅਤੇ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਕਰਮੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਟੈਲੀਵਿਜਨ ਮਾਲਕਾਂ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਵਧੀਆ ਸਬੰਧ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਵਾ ਉੱਘੇ ਕਾਲਮ ਨਵੀਸ ਅਤੇ ਲੇਖਕ ਕੁਲਦੀਪ ਨਈਅਰ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਜਨ-ਸੰਚਾਰ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਲੋਂ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਮੌਕੇ ਸੰਬੋਧਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕੀਤਾ। "

ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਸੈਨੇਟ ਹਾਲ ਵਿਖੇ 'ਭਾਰਤੀ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਚੁਣੌਤੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ' ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਤੇ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਮੌਕੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਨਈਅਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦੋ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ 1962 ਅਤੇ 1980 ਵਿੱਚ ਆਈਆਂ ਰਿਪੋਰਟਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੱਧਰ ਤੇ ਬਦਲਾਅ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਡਾ. ਮਨਮੋਹਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਵੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਤੀ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਹੁੰਗਾਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ।

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਸ ਪਾਸੇ ਪਹਿਲਕਦਮੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਦੀ ਖਤਮ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਦੀ ਭਰੋਸੇਯੋਗਤਾ ਮੁੜ ਬਰਕਰਾਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। 1975 ਦੀ ਐਮਰਜੈਂਸੀ ਦੇ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਜਾ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਨਾਂ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਮਾਲਕ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਤੱਕਦੇ ਸਨ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ, ਪਰ 1975 ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਮਾਲਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਉਦਯੋਗਿਕ ਘਰਾਣੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਵਰਤਾਰੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਨੈਟਵਰਕ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਖੜ੍ਹੇ ਹਨ।

ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਵਾਈਸ-ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਜਨ-ਸੰਚਾਰ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਥਾਪਕ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਕੁਲਦੀਪ ਨਈਅਰ ਨੂੰ 'ਫਾਊਂਡਿੰਗ ਫਾਦਰ' ਦੇ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਵਾਜਿਆ। ਸ੍ਰੀ ਨਈਅਰ ਨੂੰ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ 34 ਸਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਸਥਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਲਈ ਪਾਏ ਅਹਿਮ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਬਦਲੇ ਇੱਕ ਮੇਮੈਂਟੋ ਅਤੇ ਯਾਦਗਾਰੀ ਫੋਟੋ ਭੇਂਟ ਕੀਤੀ।

ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਖੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਉਤਰੀ ਭਾਰਤ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਅਤਿ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਸੈਂਟਰ ਸਥਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਸੈਂਟਰ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਤਿ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਸਹੂਲਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਲੈਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ, ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਖਰਚੇ ਜਾਣਗੇ। ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਇੱਕ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਭਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਭਰੋਸੇਯੋਗਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਜਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਰਵਈਆ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਜਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ।



ਟ੍ਰਿਬਿਊਨ ਗਰੁੱਪ ਅਖਬਾਰ ਦੇ ਆਡੀਟਰ-ਇੰਨ-ਚੀਫ ਡਾ. ਐਚ.ਕੇ. ਦੂਆ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਦਾ ਉਦਘਾਟਨ ਕੀਤਾ, ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਜਨ-ਸੰਚਾਰ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਲੋਂ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਦੂਆ ਨੇ ਉਦਘਾਟਨੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰੀਕਰਨ ਨੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਦਰਾਂ ਕੀਮਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡੀ ਢਾਹ ਲਾਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਦੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਰਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਖੁੱਲੇ ਆਦਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਵੱਡੀ ਸੱਟ ਵੱਜੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਤੰਤਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਖਤਰਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਿਜਲਈ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਤੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਸਾਧਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਪਾਸੇ ਬਿਜਲਈ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਨੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਮੁਸੀਬਤਾਂ ਖੜੀਆਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਵਲੋਂ ਅਸਲ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਛੁਪਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਪਾਰਕ ਮਨੋਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੱਖ ਰਖ ਕੇ ਅੱਧੇ ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਬਿਜਲਈ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਪਛੜੇ ਇਲਾਕਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਤਵੱਜੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਸਿਰਫ ਮਾਰਧਾੜ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕਾ ਅੱਗੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਮਾੜਾ ਅਸਰ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਰਿਲਾਇੰਸ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਪੋਰੇਟ ਕਮਿਊਨੀਕੇਸ਼ਨਜ਼ ਹੈਡ ਅਤੇ ਐਕਸਟਰਨਲ ਅਫੇਅਰਜ਼ ਸਲਾਹਕਾਰ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਕਮਲਜੀਤ ਰਤਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਲੋਂ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਕਮਲਜੀਤ ਰਤਨ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਕਈ ਰੋਜਾਨਾ ਅਖਬਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਟੂਡੇ ਸਮੇਤ ਦੋ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ, ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਹਾਈ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਕ ਵਿਸ਼ਲੇਸ਼ਕ ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਰਿਲਾਇੰਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਰਜ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਰਤਨ ਨੇ ਕੁਲਦੀਪ ਨਈਅਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਅਮਿਤਾਬ ਬੱਚਨ ਦਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਡਾ. ਸੰਜੇ ਵਾਡਵਲਕਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਅੱਜਕਲ ਅਖਬਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਬਿਜਲਈ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਤਿਹਾਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਮਾਨ ਵੇਚਣ ਲਈ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਸਾਧਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਕੱਚੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਮਾੜੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਮਾੜੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਹ ਰੱਖੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਜਨ-ਸੰਚਾਰ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਡਾ. ਗੁਰਮੀਤ ਮਾਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਿਤ ਡਾਕੂਮੈਂਟਰੀ ਫਿਲਮ 'ਚੈਲ' ਵੀ ਦਿਖਾਈ ਗਈ। ਡਾ. ਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਡਾਕੂਮੇਂਟਰੀ ਹਿਮਾਚਲ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਸਥਾਨ ਚੈਲ ਬਾਰੇ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਡਾ. ਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਤਿੰਨ ਰੋਜਾ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਦੇਸ਼ ਭਰ ਤੋਂ 200 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਡੈਲੀਗੇਟ ਭਾਗ ਲੈ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਦੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਸੈਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ 30 ਪੇਪਰ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਜਾਣਗੇ।

Dua to inaugurate seminar on "Challenges & Opportunities before Indian Media"; Kuldip Nayar, Dua to be honoured

Patiala, March 23- Mr H.K. Dua, Editor-in-Chief of The Tribune, will inaugurate the three-day national seminar, being organised by Punjabi University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication from March 24 to 26 in the University Senate Hall. While Mr Kamaljeet Rattan, Advisor, External Relations and Chief, Corporate Communications, Reliance, ADA, will be the Guest of Honour, Dr Sanjay Wadwalkar, Professor in the Department of Mass Communication, Panjab University, Chandigarh, will deliver the keynote address. Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor, will preside over the seminar during which, veteran journalist and founder of the University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Mr Kuldip Nayar will be honoured as “Founding Father” and Mr Dua as “Doyen of the Indian Media”.

            Giving this information, HoD of Journalism and Mass Communication, Dr Gurmeet Singh Maan said that more than 200 delegates from all over India will participate, of which around 30 will present their research papers.             Mr Sidhu Damdami, Editor of Punjabi Tribune, Prof B.K. Kuthiala, Director, Department of Mass Communication and Media Technology, Kurukshetra University, Dr Manoj Dayal, Dean, Faculty of Media Studies, Guru Jambeshwar University, Hisar and Dr Vikram Dutt, an American broadcaster, among others, will share their thoughts on the subject. A special session on Challenges and Opportunities before Vernacular Media” will also be held on March 25.

VC expresses grief over Dr Dil's death

Patiala, March 21- Punjabi University’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh has expressed deep shock and grief over the demise of Dr Balbir Singh Dil, a critic and poet of high stature. Dr Dil was awarded life fellowship by the University for his significant contribution in the field of Punjabi language, literature and culture even as he remained associated with the University in many ways throught his life.

ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਸਾਈਕਾਲੋਜੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਮੁਖੀ ਡਾ. ਐਸ.ਕੇ. ਸੋਖੀ ਨੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਦਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਤਰਾਂ, ਇਸ ਵਾਰ ਵੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਮਨੋਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵੱਲੋ ਅੱਜ ਇੱਕ ਸਲਾਨਾ ਸਮਾਗਮ "ਸਾਈਕੋਫੈਸਟ 2009" ਦਾ ਆਯੋਜਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਵਿੱਚ, ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਮਚਾਰੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ, ਨੇੜੇ ਲਗਦੇ ਕਾਲਜਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਕੂਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਵੱਧ ਚੜ ਕੇ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਜਾ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਖੂਬ ਲਾਭ ਉਠਾਇਆ ।

ਇਸ ਸਾਲ ਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਾ "ਟਵਾਰਡਜ ਵੈਲ ਬੀਂਗ ਐਂਡ ਹੈਲਦੀ ਲਿਵਿੰਗ" ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਿਤ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਨੋਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਟੈਸਟਿੰਗ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਉਂਸਲਿੰਗ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ 4 ਵੱਖ_ਵੱਖ ਵਰਕਸ਼ਾਪਸ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਆਯੋਜਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ "ਪ੍ਰਸਨੈਲਿਟੀ", "ਇਮ੍ਵੋਨਲ ਇਨਟੈਲੀੈਂਨਸ", "ਬਿਹੇਵੀਅਰਲ ਮੋਡੀਫਿਕੇਸ਼ਨ" ਅਤੇ "ਇੰਨਟਰਵਿਊ ਸਕਿਲਂ" ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਤੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਯੋਗ ਬਨਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਗਏ। ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਵਰਕਸ਼ਾਪਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾ ਮਿਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਹਰਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਸੁਝਾਅ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ।

ਸਾਈਕੋਫੈਸਟ_2009 ਵਿਚ ਮਨੋਵਿਗਿਆਨਿਕ ਟੈਸਟਿੰਗ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਉਂਸਲਿੰਗ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੁਵਿਧਾਵਾਂ ਵੀ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਬੁੱੱਧੀ, ਵਿਅਕਤੀਤਵ, ਯੋਗਤਾ ਅਤੇ "ਵੈੱਲ ਬੀਂਗ" ਦੀ ਟੈਸਟਿੰਗ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਟੈਸਟ ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਾਉਂਸਲਿੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ। ਕੁੱਲ 950 ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਟੈਸਟ ਕਰਕੇ, ਨਤੀਜੇ ਦੇ ਆਧਰ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਾਉਂਸਲਿੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ। ਕਾਉਂਸੰਿਲਗ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਤਵ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਧਾਰਣ ਲਈ ਸੁਝਾਅ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ। ਇਸ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਵਿਚ ਤਨਾਅ ਅਤੇ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਤੇ ਖਾਸ ਧਿਆਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਮੁੱਖ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ। ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਮਚਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਤਨਾਅ ਅਤੇ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ "ਰਿਲੈਕ੍ਵ੍ਵੇਨ ਥੈਰੀਪੀ" ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਈ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਕਨੀਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਯੋਗ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਇਕ ਪੋਸਟਰ ਕੰਪੀਟੀ੍ਵਨ ਵੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਨਵੀਨਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਸ਼ੈਲੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਈਕੋਫੈਸਟ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਨੂੰ ਪੋਸਟਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਦਰਸਾਇਆ।


Emphasis laid on developing holistic health

Patiala, March 20- Punjabi University’s Department of Psychology organised a free psychological testing and counselling camp, “Psychofest”, aimed at developing a positive personality and an attitude of wellbeing towards life in its department here today. Workshops on emotional intelligence, interview skills and behaviour modification attracted a large number of visitors to interact with the experts to get valuable tips to live a quality life.

            Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh said that the best gift of life was good physical and mental health without which no spiritual or any other kind of attainment was possible. He emphasized upon developing holistic health and an affirmative attitude towards life for which the science of psychology can play a pivotal rile. The fast food culture and different kinds of environmental pollutants, increasing with each passing day, further necessitate the adoption of measures oriented towards maintaining good health, he said.

            According to Dr S.K. Sokhi, HoD of Psychology said that workshop on behaviour modification provided valuable tips to the participants about changing their faulty lifestyle patterns and polishing their verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Different kinds of relaxation therapies were given through professionally handled music therapy, EEG, EMG, ECG, GSR and temperature biofeedback. Multi-behaviour therapies and psychological testing facilities were also given in five different cells through
standardized psychological tests aimed at testing personality intelligence aptitude, well being, stress and anxiety levels.

            Around 1,000 participants were tested and provided with suitable counselling, of which 25 per cent registered themselves for the relaxation cell only. Students from professional courses line B.Tech. MBA, Computer Science and Law and outnumbered students from other disciplines.

ਪਟਿਆਲਾ, 19 ਮਾਰਚ- 'ਬਾਇਓਤਕਨਾਲੋਜੀ ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਸੂਖਮ ਅਤੇ ਖਤਰਨਾਕ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਔਜਾਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੜੀ ਹੀ ਸੂਝਬੂਝ ਨਾਲ ਵਰਤਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਲਈ ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਫਾਇਦੇਮੰਦ ਜਾਂ ਤਬਾਹਕੁਨ ਸਾਬਤ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਵਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਉਪ-ਕੁਲਪਤੀ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ 'ਬਾਇਓਟੈਕ-2009: ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾਂਵਾਂ' ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਤੇ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਦੋ ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕੀਤਾ।"

ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਇੰਸ ਆਡੀਟੋਰੀਅਮ ਵਿਖੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਮੌਕੇ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮਸ਼ੀਨੀਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਨਾਫਾਖੋਰੀ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਹੋੜ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਦਯੋਗਪਤੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਪਾਣੀ, ਧਰਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਹਵਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਹਿਰ ਘੋਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਅੱਜ ਹਰ ਚੀਜ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮਸ਼ੀਨੀਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਹੋੜ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਡੀਆਂ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਪੀੜੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਰਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਜਿਥੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਫ ਸੁਥਰਾ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਉਪਰਾਲੇ ਕਰਨੇ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਥੇ ਉਦਯੋਗਪਤੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਜੁਮੇਵਾਰੀ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਹਰਾ ਭਰਾ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਯਤਨ ਕਰਨ। ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਾਹਿਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਬਾਇਓਟੈਕ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਨੂੰ ਠੀਕ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਾਰਜ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਕਾਰਜਾਂ ਲਈ ਪੂਰੀ ਮੱਦਦ ਕਰੇਗੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਇਓਟੈਕ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਕੰਮ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੋਜੈਕਟ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਜੋਰ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਜੈਕਟਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਲਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਪੂਰੀ ਵਿੱਤੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ।
 

ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਦਘਾਟਨੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਬਾਬਾ ਫਰੀਦ ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਸਾਇੰਸਜ਼ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਵਾਈਸ-ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਡਾ. ਐਸ.ਐਸ. ਗਿੱਲ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਬਾਇਓਟੈਕ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਤਰੱਕੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਾਜ ਦੀ ਬਿਹਤਰੀ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਤਕਨਾਲੋਜੀ ਦੀ ਗਲਤ ਮੰਤਵਾਂ ਲਈ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਆਸਾਰ ਹਨ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਸਾਇੰਸ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਕਾਂਢਾਂ ਐਟਮ ਬੰਬ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਮਾਰੂ ਹਥਿਆਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ।

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਬਾਇਓਟੈਕ ਬੜੀ ਹੀ ਅਗਾਂਹਵਧੂ ਤਕਨਾਲੋਜੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਗਲਤ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਪੇੜ ਪੌਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਨਵਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਕਦਰ ਤੱਕ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਪਹੁੰਚਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਨਸਲਾਂ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਬੋਲਦਿਆਂ ਮੰਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਮੰਨੀ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਰੈਨਬੈਕਸੀ ਦੇ ਆਰ ਐਂਡ ਡੀ ਦੇ ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰ ਡਾ. ਕੁਲਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੈਣੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਅੱਜ ਕੱਲ ਦਵਾਈਆਂ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਕੰਪਨੀਆਂ ਜੀਨ-ਆਧਾਰਿਤ ਦਵਾਈਆਂ ਵਿਕਸਤ ਕਰਨ ਵੱਲ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਕੇਂਦਰਤ ਹਨ, ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਇਕ ਦਵਾਈ ਇੱਕ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਲਈ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਠੀਕ ਬੈਠੇਗੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਨਵੀਂ ਕਾਢ ਕਈ ਕੈਂਸਰ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਜਾਨਲੇਵਾ ਬਿਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਠੀਕ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਫੀ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਡਾ. ਸੈਣੀ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਮਾਲੀਕਿਉਲਰ ਅਧਾਰਿਤ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਇੱਕ ਦਵਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਲਾਜ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਣ ਲਈ ਘੱਟੋ ਘੱਟ 10 ਤੋਂ 15 ਸਾਲ ਲਗਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਇੰਨੀ ਮਹਿੰਗੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਖੋਜ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕੰਪਨੀਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਕਈ-ਕਈ ਸੌ ਕਰੋੜ ਰੁਪਏ ਖਰਚੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਡਾ. ਸੈਣੀ ਨੇ ਬੁਾਇਓਟੈਕ ਦੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਖੋਜ ਕਾਰਜਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਫੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਹਨ।

ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਮੁਖੀ ਡਾ. ਪੀ.ਪੀ. ਬਲਗੀਰ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਦੋ ਦਿਨਾ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਫੂਡ ਐਂਡ ਫਰਮੈਂਟੇਸ਼ਨ, ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਬਾਇਓਟੈਕ, ਐਗਰੀਕਰਲਚਰ ਬਾਇਓਟੈਕ ਅਤੇ ਇਨਫਾਰਮੈਂਟਲ ਬਾਇਓਟੈਕ ਬਾਰੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਚਾਰ ਸੈਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਜਾਣਗੀਆਂ। ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਡਾ. ਅਰੁਨਾ ਭਾਟੀਆ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਦੋ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਦੋ ਦਰਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਪੇਪਰ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਜਾਣਗੇ।

ਪਟਿਆਲਾ, 18 ਮਾਰਚ- ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਲੋਜ਼ ਅਲੀਗੜ ਮੁਸਲਿਮ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੀ ਤਰਜ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਫਿਲਮ ਫੈਸਟੀਵਲ ਇਸੇ ਸਾਲ ਤੋਜ਼ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ ਜੋ ਹਰ ਸਾਲ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਵਿਰਾਸਤ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਲੋਜ਼ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਕਲਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤਾਬੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਡੀਓ ਵਿਜ਼ੁਅਲ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਇਸ ਦਾ ਐਲਾਨ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਉਪਕੁਲਪਤੀ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ "ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਿਨੇਮੇ ਦੇ ਨਵੇਜ਼ ਰੁਝਾਨ" ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਤੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਯੁਵਕ ਭਲਾਈ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਲੋਜ਼ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਗਈ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਚਰਚਾ ਮੌਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕੀਤਾ। ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਕਲਾ ਭਵਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਗਈ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਚਰਚਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਿੰਦੀ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਮਾਚਿਸ, ਮੁੰਨਾ ਬਾਈ ਐਮ.ਬੀ.ਬੀ.ਐਸ. ਅਤੇ ਲਗੇ ਰਹੋ ਮੁੰਨਾ ਬਾਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਹਿਮ ਕਿਰਦਾਰ ਨਿਭਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜਿੰਮੀ ਸ਼ੇਰਗਿੱਲ, ਟੀ.ਵੀ. ਸੀਰੀਅਲਾਂ ਕਰੀਨਾ ਕਰੀਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਮੰਨਤ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੀ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ ਦੀ ਹੀਰੋਇਨ ਕੁਲਰਾਜ ਰੰਧਾਵਾ, ਕਮੇਡੀਅਨ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਘੁੱਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਲਮ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੀ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਕ ਨਵਨੀਤ ਗੁਗਨੂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਚਰਚਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਲਿਆ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਲਈ ਉਸਾਰੂ ਅਤੇ ਅਗਾਂਹਵਧੂ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਅਪਣਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਵਕਾਲਤ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਿਨੇਮੇ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਤਲਾਸ਼ ਕੇ ਉੱਚ ਦਰਜੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਮੌਕਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਲਾਸ਼ਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
 

ਜਿੰਮੀ ਸ਼ੇਰਗਿੱਲ ਨੇ ਬੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੀ ਅਫਸੋਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿੱਤੀ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਈ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਝੌਤੇ ਕਰਨੇ ਪੈਜ਼ਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਫਿਲਮ ਨਿਰਮਾਤਾ ਵੀ ਵਧੀਆ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਵੱਧ ਪੈਸਾ ਲਾਉਣ ਤੋਜ਼ ਝਿਜਕਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਕੌੜੀ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਸੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਦੇ ਠੇਕੇ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਤਾਂ ਹਰ ਵਾਹ ਲਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਜਦੋਜ਼ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਆਉਜ਼ਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਖਿੱਚ ਲੈਜ਼ਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹਰ ਸਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਫਿਲਮ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਜਿੰਮੀ ਸ਼ੇਰਗਿੱਲ ਨੇ ਪਾਈਰੇਸੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਆੜੇ ਹੱਥੀਜ਼ ਲਿਆ ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਕਾਰਵਾਈਆਂ ਕਾਰਨ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਹੋਰ ਮੰਦੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ। ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਆਮ ਧਾਰਨਾ ਕਿ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਚਾਹਵਾਨ ਲੜਕੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸੋਸ਼ਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨੂੰ ਨਕਾਰਦਿਆਂ ਕੁਲਰਾਜ ਰੰਧਾਵਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕੁੱਝ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਜ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਿਨੇਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਫੁਲਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਯਤਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ। ਕਈ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਹਿਮ ਕਿਰਦਾਰ ਨਿਭਾਉਣ
ਵਾਲੇ ਕਲਾਕਾਰ ਬੀਨੂੰ ਢਿਲੋਜ਼ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਿਨੇਮੇ ਦੇ ਨਿਘਾਰ ਲਈ ਖੁਦ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਜਿੰਮੇਵਾਰ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਭਾਵੁਕ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਮੇਡੀਅਨ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਘੁੱਗੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਹਿੰਦੀ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਟੈਜ਼ਡਰਡ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਲਈ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਿਨੇਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹਾਲੇ ਕਾਫੀ ਲੰਮਾ ਪੈਜ਼ਡਾ ਤੈਹ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਸਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਜ਼ ਵੱਧੀਆ ਜਰੀਆ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਕੁੱਝ ਸਿੱਖ ਨਾਇਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਤੇ ਲਾਈਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਰੋਕਾਂ ਹਟਾਉਣੀਆਂ ਚਾਹੀਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਿਚੱ ਵੱਡੀ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਹਨ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਿਨੇਮੇ ਦੇ ਅਤੀਤ ਨੂੰ ਫਰੋਲਦਿਆਂ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਯੁਵਕ ਭਲਾਈ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰ ਡਾ. ਸਤੀਸ਼ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਵਰਮਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੁੱਝ ਸਮੇਜ਼ ਤੋਜ਼ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਫਿਲਮ ਉਦਯੋਗ ਨੇ ਕਾਫੀ ਤਰੱਕੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਨਵੇਜ਼ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ 6000 ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਜ਼ ਕਾਫੀ ਅਮੀਰ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ 12 ਨੰਬਰ ਤੇ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਦੁਰਦਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਜ਼ ਬਲਕਿ ਖੁਦ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਹੀ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਤੇ ਠੋਸ ਯਤਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਰੋਕ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।

Two-Day symposium on Biotech-2009: "Present and Future Perspective”

Patiala, Mar 19 : Biotechnology is a sensitive and critical scientific tool which has to be used most judiciously as it could prove a boon or bane for  humanity, environment and over ecology of the planet Earth, said Vice Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh.

      Presiding over a two-day symposium on Biotech-2009: Present and Future Perspective” at the university campus, Dr Jaspal Singh said with the advancement of the industry in the modern age, the environment got pollution, water resources got poisoned and soil became sick. All this happened because, in the pursuit of profits and more money, the industrialists ignored the disastrous impact of use of advanced scientific techniques.

       He exhorted the assemblage of experts to work for restoration of the spoilt environment with the use of biotech and the university will fully support such venture. And he asked the Department of Biotechnology to take a lead in this direction.

      In his inaugural address, Baba Farid University of Medical Sciences, Dr S.S. Gill said the advanced biotech should be used for welfare of the society because there are greeter chances of utilizing it for destructive purposes as the scientific inventions in the past in the shape of atom bomb and other lethal weapons.

    But Biotech is most advanced gene technology which could alter human beings, plants and animals to the extent of extinction and evolution of these species through millennium go haywire, Dr Gill added.

      Dr Kulvinder Singh Saini MD of R and D from Ranbaxy, a  Pharmaceutical
major  said now the pharma companies world over are concentrating on developing gene-focus medicines instead of  manufacturing a drug suited to one and all. Developing of a molecular based drug , of which biotechnology is the bigger tool, takes at least 10 to 15 years for reaching the market. That is why, this process is costlier and his company has earmarked a sum of Rs 500 crore  for such a project, he added.

Dr Saini urged the biotech students to devote their more time and energy on applied biotech instead of pure theory pursuits.
        Introducing the theme of the symposium, Department head Dr.P P Balgir said the deliberations will focus on four topics- Food and Fermentation, Medical Biotech, Agriculture Biotech and Environmental biotech. Dr Aruna Bhatia from the Department more than two dozen papers will be presented and discussed.
 

Punjabi University to start film festival from current year

Patiala, March 18- “Punjabi University will start Punjabi Film Festival as its annual feature from the current year on the lines of Aligarh Muslim University, which conducts Urdu Film Festivals on regular basis. It will also properly document Punjabi folk art forms in textual and audio-visual formats and patronize any kind of effort with the objective of promoting the rich Punjabi cultural heritage.”

            This was announced by Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the University while presiding over a symposium on “New Trends in Punjabi Cinema”, organised by the University’s Department of Youth Welfare at Kala Bhawan here today. Top film star of Hindi films, who shot into prominence with such blockbusters as Machis, Munna Bhai MBBS, and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Jimmy Shergill participated in the discussion. He was accompanied by the heroine of famous TV soap, Kareena Kareena and Punjabi Feature films, Mannat and Tera Mera Ki Rishta, Kulraj Randhawa, comedy king, Gurpreet Ghugi, character actor, Binnu Dhillon and director of the film Tera Mera Ki Rishta, Navnit Gugnu. While advocating the adoption of an aggressive and proactive approach for the furtherance of Punjabi language and culture, the Vice-Chancellor declared to initiate a project by the University to trace the history of Punjabi Cinema and explore the possibilities for making high quality Punjabi films.

            Jimmy Shergill regretted the fact that Punjabi film makers have to compromise on many fronts due to paucity of financers and producers who hesitate to extend financial help for making good quality films. “It was deplorable that Punjabi NRIs can spend exorbitantly to purchase liquor vends but draw cold feet when it comes to finance Punjabi films,” he said. While promising to make at least one Punjabi film every year, Shergill condemned the practice of making pirated copies of films which further lead to running down of the Punjabi films. Kulraj rejected the prevailing impression as a myth that girls, who aspire to join film industry, are exploited against their wishes. She urged for making collective efforts to promote Punjabi cinema. Binnu Dhillon said that Punjabis themselves were responsible for the downfall of Punjabi films.

            In his emotional outburst against those who care a fig for the promotion of Punjabi cinema, Gurpreet Ghugi said that we have a long way to go till we reach the level and standard of Hindi feature films. He rated films as the best medium to promote a culture. He called upon the Sikh authorities to lift ban on showing some Sikh heroes in films as these were acting as ‘roadblocks’ in making historical films. While tracing the history of Punjabi cinema, Director Youth Welfare, Dr Satish Kumar Verma said that the past decade had launched a sort of renaissance and set new trends in the Punjabi film industry. He said that Punjabi was one of the richest languages of the world, occupying 12th place in 6,000 languages spoken all over the world. No other than Punjabis can salvage the prestige that was getting lost as Punjabis themselves feel ashamed of talking about their culture.

Punjab agriculture in crisis despite optimum production: Dr Kang

Patiala, Mar 17 : Despite producing of  22 per cent wheat , 12 per cent rice and 13 per cent cotton of the country's total , the Punjab agriculture is in serious crisis that have pushed 90 per cent farm households under debt, mounting to whooping Rs 26,000 crore said Punjab Agriculture University (PAU) Vice Chancellor MS Kang.

          Inaugurating two-day seminar on "Punjab Economy: Performance and Challenges" organized by the Department of Economics at the university campus, Dr Kang said the farm production is of optimum level as the state shares less than 2 per cent of the total cultivable land of the country.

     Moreover, the total value of farm produce per annum from the state has down to Rs 22695 crore now from Rs 26000 crore in 1994-95, he said adding the pauperization of farm families has led migration of farmers which now touches one lakh hands. The farm income per hectare has come down because produce prices announced by the Central government as Minimum Support Price (MSP) increased on average by one per cent while the prices of inputs rose by 3.5 per cent. And, the growth rate of agriculture Punjab, registered at 10 per cent in 1980s has come down to mere 1.2 per cent now and soil got fatigued and sick requiring more does of fertilizers, pesticides and other inputs to achieve the same level of production.

       He raised a pertinent point that Punjab could receive only Rs 1000 crore share from the loan waiver of Rs 71,000 crore announced in the last Central Budget because the state farmers did not fit into the parameters laid down t for availing the aid.

         Speaking on the occasion , Punjabi University Vice Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh said Punjab's agricultural performance is remarkable as it has been contributing 60 per cent of wheat and 40 per cent of rice to the Central food kitty of the country for past four decades and have acquired an acronym of "granary of India'.

     But , in the process state got it ecology, land and water resources polluted and increasing unemployment has led to drug addiction and other social evils, he added.

    Dr Jaspal Singh said "now, we should not complacent search the root causes of the problems afflicting the rural area where only 3 to 4 per cent youth are getting higher education and mere 1.5 per cent entering into professional colleges and institutes.

  Prof R.S Bawa said the over-mechanization of agriculture has contributed towards indebtedness of farmers as well as to the environmental pollution.

If the use pesticide now gets reduced, the reported damage to human DNA could get rectified.

    Summing up the observations of the experts, University Academic Dean M.S Saini said since Punjab has agro-based economy, the policy makers have to take some immediate steps to revamp the sagging farming sector.Head of Punjabi Universty Economics Department O.P Miglani and seminar co cordinator dr.G.K Bhatia also spoke on this ocassion.

    A large of economist participating in the seminar expressed concern over the shortage of power and generation not keeping pace with the increasing consumption in the state.

 ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਅਰਥ-ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਲੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ 'ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਆਰਥਿਕਤਾ: ਕਾਰਗੁਜ਼ਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਚੁਣੌਤੀਆਂ' ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਤੇ 17 ਅਤੇ 18 ਮਾਰਚ ਨੂੰ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਸੈਨੇਟ ਹਾਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਇੱਕ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਆਯੋਜਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਕੂਲ ਆਫ ਇਕਨਾਮਿਕਸ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਆਰ.ਐਸ. ਬਾਵਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦੇਣਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਦੇ ਉਪ-ਕੁਲਪਤੀ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਐਮ.ਐਸ. ਕੰਗ ਮੁੱਖ ਮਹਿਮਾਨ ਹੋਣਗੇ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਉਪ-ਕੁਲਪਤੀ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਇਸ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਦੇ ਉਦਘਾਟਨੀ ਸੈਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਕਰਨਗੇ। ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ, ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ, ਪਹਿਲੂਆਂ ਤੇ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਖੋਜ ਪੇਪਰ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨਗੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜ ਸੈਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਚਰਚਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ। ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਮੰਦਵਾੜੇ ਦੇ ਮੱਦੇਨਜ਼ਰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਆਰਥਿਕਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਠੀਕ ਦਿਸ਼ਾ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਅੱਜ ਬੋਧਿਕ ਪੱਧਰ ਤੇ ਗੰਭੀਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਖੋਜ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੱਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਘੋਖਣ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਸਬੰਧ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਜਰੂਰੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ, ਬੁੱਧੀਜੀਵੀ ਨੀਤੀਵਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਸ਼ਖਸੀਅਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਸਰਗਰਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਾਉਣ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰਗਰਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਜਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਸਮੱਗਰੀ ਉਪਲਬਧ ਹੋਵੇ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਸ ਤੇ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਵਟਾਂਦਰਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ। ਇਸ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਵੱਡੀ ਪੱਧਰ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਹਿਤਾਇਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਹਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਰੋਲ ਅਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਣਾ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਉਪਰਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪਣੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ, ਖੋਜਾਰਥੀ ਤੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਭਾਗ ਲੈ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਧਰਮ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਈਸ਼ਵਰਵਾਦ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਅਧਿਆਤਮਵਾਦ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰਤਾ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਚ ਦਰਜ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਰਾਜ ਸਭਾ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਘੱਟ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਚੇਅਰਮੈਨ ਸ੍ਰ. ਤਰਲੋਚਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਗਈ 41ਵੀਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਕਾਨਫਰੰਸ ਦੇ ਸਮਾਪਤੀ ਸਮਾਰੋਹ ਮੌਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕੀਤੇ। 'ਜੁਝਾਰੂ ਨਸਲ ਦਾ ਸੰਕਲਪ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ' ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਤੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਲੋਂ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਗਈ ਇਸ ਕਾਨਫਰੰਸ ਵਿਚ ਦੇਸ਼ ਭਰ ਤੋਂ 300 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਡੈਲੀਗੇਟਸ ਨੇ ਭਾਗ ਲਿਆ। ਸ੍ਰ. ਤਰਲੋਚਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕੁੱਝ ਗਲਤ ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ ਜੁਝਾਰੂ ਨਸਲ ਵਜੋਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਅਧਿਆਤਮਵਾਦ ਦੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਅਣਗੌਲਿਆ ਨਾ ਕਰਨ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਅਧਿਆਤਮਵਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰਣ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੁਝਾਰੂ ਨਸਲ ਜਾਂ ਕੌਮ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਮੱਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਧਾਰਨੀ ਲੋਕ ਅਧਿਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਲਈ ਬੁੱਧ ਧਰਮ ਵੱਲ ਗਏ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਦੌਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਦੇ ਜੋਰ ਤੇ ਜੰਗ ਲੜਨ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਜੁਝਾਰੂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਗੁਆ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਹਥਿਆਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਵੀ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਖਤਮ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਦੌਰ ਵਿਚ ਪੁਰਾਣੈ ਹਥਿਆਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਂਦ ਨਹੀਂ। ਇਸ ਕਾਨਫਰੰਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਹਿਮਤੀ ਜਤਾਈ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰੂਆਂ ਨੇ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਤਾ ਦੀ ਬਿਹਤਰੀ ਦੀ ਵਕਾਲਤ ਕੀਤੀ। ਸਮਾਰੋਹ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਉਪ-ਕੁਲਪਤੀ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਗਿਣਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਜੁਝਾਰੂਪਣ ਦੇ ਅਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗਲਤ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਹੈ। ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਲੋਕ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਇਸਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਧਾਂਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਲਟ ਸਿਰਫ ਲੜਾਈ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਵਲੋਂ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਗਈ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਤਰ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਨੇ ਸਾਮਰਾਜ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਜਦਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਮਜਲੂਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਚੁੱਕੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਲਾਹ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਖੋਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਅਸਲ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੱਢਲੇ ਸਰੋਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਮੁਖੀ ਡਾ. ਮੰਜੂ ਵਰਮਾ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਤਿੰਨ ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਕਾਨਫਰੰਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ 100 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਖੋਜ ਪਰਚੇ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਗਏ। ਇਸ ਕਾਨਫਰੰਸ ਦੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਸੈਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਕੁਮਕੁਮ ਰੋਏ, ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਮਦਨਜੀਤ ਕੋਰ, ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਸੁਨੀਤਾ ਪਠਾਨੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਹਰਬੰਸ ਕੋਰ ਸਾਗੂ ਨੇ ਕੀਤੀ।
 

Spirituality is the cardinal principle of Sikhism

Patiala, March 16- “Spirituality was the main thrust of theology and theosophy of Sikhism as enshrined in Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs.” This was stated by Mr Tarlochan Singh, Member of Parliament and a former Chairman of Minorities Commission of India, in his address at the valedictory function of the 41st Punjab History Conference, which concluded at the Punjabi University’s Senate hall here today. The conference on the theme, “Concept of Martial Race and the Sikhs” was organised by the University’s Department of Punjab Historical Studies which was attended by over 300 delegates from all over India.
 

            Mr Tarlochan Singh urged the Sikh preachers not to ignore spiritualism as cardinal principle of Guru Granth Sahib to endorse the idea of a few “mistaken scholars” projecting Sikhs simply as a martial race or community. The term martiality, he said, has also adopted changed connotations in the present times as days of fighting physical battles with the help of rudimentary weapons are gone. All historians, however, agree on one point that welfare of humanity was the major concern advocated by the Sikh gurus.

            Presiding over the function, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh said that the concept of martiality was being misconceived and misused by some of the Sikhs and people belonging to some other communities too for fighting any kinds of battle, ignoring all the norms and principles advocated by the Sikh Gurus. Distinguishing between the swords raised Guru Gobind Singh and Aurangzeb, he said that while the former used it to fight out tyranny, the latter wielded it for unleashing cruel and arbitrary use of authority against the helpless and impoverished. Martiality, removed away from spirituality can pose immense dangers to the humanity, he added. While advising the budding scholars to use more of original and primary sources for carrying out research, he urged the department of Punjab Historical Studies to be proactive and make rare documents available in its repository to maximum number of scholars. This will also add to the exclusive character of the department, he added.

            Dr Manju Verma, HoD of Punjab Historical Studies revealed that more than 100 research papers were presented during various technical sessions, mainly by the young and budding scholars. Prof Kumkum Roy, Prof Madanjit Kaur, Prof Sunita Pathania and Prof Harbans Kaur Sagoo presided over the ancient, medieval, modern and Punjabi sessions of the conference.

ਜੁਝਾਰੂ ਪਣ ਤਾਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਰਵਾਇਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਬੀਜ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਫਲਸਫੇ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਬੀਜੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਰਵਾਇਤ ਦਸਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੱਕ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ਜਾਰੀ ਰਹੀ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਅਤੇ 9ਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਬਲੀਦਾਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਰ ਬਲ ਮਿਲਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਜੇ ਭੋਇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਖੇਲਣ ਕਾ ਚਾਓ, ਸਿਰ ਧੜ ਤਲੀ ਹਾਲੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਓ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਿਰਫ ਉਨਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਕਾਰਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣ ਦਾ ਸੰਦੇਸ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਜੋ ਚੰਗੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਨ ਤੱਕ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਹਨ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਵਾਈਸ ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ 41ਵੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਹਿਸਟਰੀ ਕਾਨਫਰੰਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕੀਤੇ।
 

ਮਰਜੀਵੜਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਜਥੇਬੰਧਕ ਰੂਪ ਦੇਣ ਦਾ ਜਿਕਰ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਤਾਂ ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ 13 ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ 1669 ਨੂੰ ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਚ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੋਏ 80,000 ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਇੱਕਠ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ ਤਾਂ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਨੇ ਬੇਖੌਫ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਅੱਗੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਕੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਦੀ ਬੇਮਿਸਾਲ ਉਦਾਹਰਣ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ।

ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਦਰਜਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਲਈ ਕਈ ਹਦਾਇਤਾ ਵੀ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੀਆ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੇ ਸਿਰਫ ਉਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਚੁੱਕਣ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਰਾਹ ਬੰਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ। ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਮਰਜੀਵੜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਲੱਖਣ ਉਦਾਹਰਣ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਈ ਘਨੱਈਆ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਸਥਾਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਜੰਗ ਦੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਜਖਮੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਦੀ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਦਾ ਅੱਗੇ ਵਿਵਰਣ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ਾਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਅਤੇ ਯੁੱਧ ਕਲਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਿਆਂ ਇੰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ ਫੌਜ ਵਿਚ ਭਰਤੀ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਤਾਕਤਵਰ ਅਤੇ ਭੈਅ ਰਹਿਤ ਕੌਮ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਦਬਲੇ ਕੁਰਚੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੌਕੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਹਕੂਮਤਾ ਦੇ ਲਤਾੜੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਲਈ ਅੱਗੇ ਆਏ ਹੈ।

ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੜੇ ਹੀ ਸੰਵੇਦਨਸੀਲ ਕਾਰਜ ਦਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਦਿੰਦਿਆ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਪਾਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਬਰੀਕੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਮਾਨਦਾਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਮੁਫਾਦਾ ਲਈ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਗਲਤ ਰੰਗਤ ਦੇਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਈ ਝਮੇਲੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿੰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਬੜਾ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਭਾਸਣ ਦਿੰਦਿਆ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਲਾਲ ਨਹਿਰੂ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਇਸਤਿਆਜ਼ ਅਹਿਮਦ ਖਾਨ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਬੜੀ ਫਕਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਾਰਸ਼ਲ ਰੇਸ਼ ਕਲੋਨੀਅਨ ਕਲਾ ਕਿਰਤ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਰਵਾਇਤਾ ਦੇ ਬਦਲਣ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਮੁਖੀ ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਮੰਜੂ ਵਰਮਾ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਿਚ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਕਾਫੀ ਅਮੀਰ ਸਮੱਗਰੀ ਪਈ ਹੈ। ਹਿਸਟਰੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਡਾ. ਐਸ.ਐਮ ਵਰਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਰਜਿਸਟਰਾਰ ਡਾ. ਸੁਖਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਖਹਿਰਾ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਸੰਬੋਧਨ ਕੀਤਾ।

Martial tradition quintessential to Sikh ethos

Patiala, March 14- “Martial tradition is quintessential to the Sikh ethos and practice. The original seeds of this great tradition lie in the Sikh philosophy, starting with Guru Nanak and crystallizing into a concrete form with Guru Gobind Singh, even as it got strengthened with the sacrifices of Guru Arjun and Guru Tegh Bahadur, the fifth and the ninth Sikh masters, respectively. It evolved as a concept with Guru Nanak giving a clarion call to only those to join his esoteric group, who were ready to sacrifice their lives for a noble cause without any dithering with his recitation, jo toe prem khelan ka chao, sir dhar tali gali mori aao.”

This was stated by Dr Jaspal Singh Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, while p[presiding over the 41st Punjab History Conference on “ Concept of Martial Race and the Sikhs” at the University’s Senate Hall here this morning.  The epistemology of martiality, he said, took the form an institution when it found its true application on the day of *Baisakhi* on April 13, 1699, as five Sikhs volunteered to lay their heads at an informal gathering of 80,000 people with a simple call from Guru Gobind Singh. “It was a tough competition with one hundred per cent result”, Dr Jaspal Singh added.

The Vice-chancellor further said that the British recruited maximum Sikhs in their army understanding well their capacity to face fierce resistance and possessing qualities of courage, loyalty, resilience and skill in military tactics. Sikhs, he said, were unquestionably a brave, chivalrous and fearless community, always coming to the rescue of those who were fearful and oppressed. Rating history as a sensitive discipline, he urged the historians to treat and deal with it with utmost care and a sense of delicacy. It has perhaps rightly been said that even God can’t alter the past but historians can! History, he said, remains a beauty when recorded truthfully and can become a catastrophe at the same time when twisted by someone to meet one’s selfish motives and ends, as presently is being done by a section of fundamentalists or people donning mistaken identities, reducing religion into a cult of fanaticism.

Prof Imtiaz Ahmad Khan from JNU, New Delhi, in his keynote address, said
that there was strong need to distinguish between articulation of martial race as a colonial artefact or as an attribute associated with changes in Sikh tradition. Prof Manju Verma, HoD, said that her department contained a rich repository of valuable documents, pictures and paintings which the scholars could make a great use of. Giving historical account of martial race, Dr S.M. Verma, Professor of History at Punjabi University said that the British were apt at distinguishing warriors from the general populace. That’s why they always preferred Sikhs while recruiting soldiers in their army, even as Punjab was regarded as a nursery of martial races.

Dr S.S. Khehra, Registrar of the University, said that Sikhs were the symbols of collective bravery even as Sikh regiment was rated as the most decorated wing of the Indian army.
 

History Conf begins tomorrow

Patiala, March 13-Punjabi University’s Department of Punjab Historical Studies is organizing a three-day Punjab History Conference on, “The Concept of Martial Race and the Sikhs” from March 14 to 16 at the University Senate Hall. According to Dr Manju Verma HoD, Prof Imtiaz Ahmed from JNU, New Delhi will inaugurate the conference, while Prof B.B. Chowdhry from Calcutta University will deliver the keynote address and Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, will preside over.

Mesmerising dance performances at pbi varsity

Patiala, March 12- The kala bhawan of Punjabi University witnessed a splash of colour, though of a different nature, matching the festival of colours, here last evening. It happened in shape of mesmerizing dance performances by the faculty and students of University’s dance department, led by the doyen of Jaipur Gharana, Guru Rajendra Gangani. The show was the culmination of a six-day workshop, conducted by Gangani, a winner of Sangeet Natak Academyaward and a Fellow of the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Academy, for the students of the dance department.
 

            Thirtyfive students of M.A. and B.A. (Hons. School in Dance) , who were trained by Gangani during the workshop, performed a ganesha sholoka “Gajananam Mangala Mangalam”, followed by various technical aspects of kathak, like ganesh paran, amad, toda, tukkra, and tehais in teentaal. This was followed by a riveting duet performance by Dr Indira Bali and Dr Deepanwita on bandish, based on lyrics of bhagat kavi Surdas, “nachata sudanga, shrinada nanda” and musical composition of Gangani in rupak taal. The evening reached its climax with a scintillating performance by Gangani himself in which he presented purely traditional compositions of Jaipur Kathak in teentaal. His impromptu performance of jugalbandi with Madhuresh Bhatt on tabla emerged as the most fascinating aspect of the show. The dancers ably were accompanied by Madhuresh Bhatt on tabla, Arun Kumar on pakhawaj, Mujtabah Hussain on flute, Bhairavi Sharma on sitar, with Neeraj Gandhi providing the vocal support.
 

            Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh that he would help all those artists, who help bring alive, strengthen and sustain the rich tradition of Indian dances, in every possible manner. He urged the budding artists to help carry forward the splendid Indian culture, which doesn’t have any parallel in the world. He honoured Rajendra Gangani with a memento and thanked him for conducting the workshop. Dr Gurcharan Singh, HoD of Dance and Dean, Faculty of Art and Culture, welcomed the guests and thanked the North Zone Cultural Centre for the financial help. Professor of Eminence, Mr Sutinder Singh Noor, Director, World Punjabi Centre, Dr Deepak Manmohan Singh, Mr S.K. Ahluwalia, former Commissioner, Patiala Division, Dr Daisy Walia, Principal of the GCG, Patiala and Director, NZCC, Mr D.S. Saroya were present on the occasion.

ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ 'ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ: ਗਲੋਬਲ ਸਰੋਕਾਰ' ਦੇ ਸਬੰਧ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਾ. ਮਹਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਗਿੱਲ ਨੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ-ਵਿਆਪੀ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ-ਵੱਡੇ ਦੁਨਿਆਵੀ ਪੱਧਰ ਦੇ ਮਸਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਨਮੁੱਖ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਨ, ਸਮਾਜ ਦੀ ਵਰਣ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਦਲਿਤ ਉਤਪੀੜ੍ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਲਿੰਗ-ਵਿਤਕਰੇ
ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਮੁੱਢਲੀਆਂ ਬੁਰਾਈਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਖਮ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਵ-ਪੂਰਨ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਜ ਦੇ 'ਅੱਤਵਾਦ ਦੇ ਦੈਂਤ' ਦੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਗੁਣ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਯੋਗਿਆ ਦਰਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ।

ਡਾ. ਜਗਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਨਿਆਵੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਅਤੇ ਅਧਿਆਤਮਕਤਾ ਦਾ ਸੁਮੇਲ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਡਾ. ਗੁਰਨਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਘੇੜਾ, ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਾਸੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਥ ਅਨਿਖੜਵੇਂ ਅੰਗ ਹਨ।


ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਦਾ ਉਦਘਾਟਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉੱਘੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਭਾਈ ਅਸ਼ੋਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਗੜੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਰੀਤੀ ਰਿਵਾਜਾਂ ਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਵਾਦੀ ਹਮਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣ ਲਈ ਯਤਨ ਕਰਨ।

ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਧਰਮ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਡਾ. ਗੁਰਨੇਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਦੌਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਿਚਾਰਧਾਰਾ ਦੇ ਲਾਗੂ ਕਰਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤੇ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਡੀਨ ਅਕਾਦਮਿਕ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਡਾ. ਐਮ.ਐਸ. ਸੈਣੀ, ਡਾ. ਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਰੋਹੀ, ਡਾ. ਜਸਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਾਬਰ, ਡਾ. ਜਸਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਢਿੱਲੋਂ, ਡਾ. ਬਲਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਢਿਲੋਂ, ਡਾ. ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਚਹਿਲ, ਡਾ. ਸਰਬਜਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰ਼ੋਮਣੀ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਸਕੱਤਰ ਗੁਰਬਚਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਚਨ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤੇ।

Rs five lakhs sanctioned for Library & Archival Museum

Patiala, March 10- The Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Dr Jaspal Singh has sanctioned Rs five lakhs to the Department of Punjab Historical Studies for the creation of a “Library and Archival Museum” for the proper preservation of the rare pictures, books, and documents related to the history of Punjab. While inaugurating the newly created Library and Archival Museum in the University’s Department of Punjab Historical Studies, Dr Jaspal Singh said that “we could not afford to turn a blind eye and let the invaluable treasure of pictures and documents related to our hoary culture go waste just like this.” He assured the HoD of Punjab Historical Studies, Dr Manju Verma of every help, financial or otherwise, for furthering and perpetuating the move taken in the direction of “treating the rich repository of priceless documents from decaying”.

            While paying homage to the eminent historian, Dr Ganda Singh, who established the Department and an Oral History Cell as its wing 45 years back, Dr Jaspal Singh said that he was a witness to the oral interviews of many great and tall figures, conducted by scholars of history, which have found a place in the oral history cell of the Department. These, he said, need to be taken a special care of lest they meet a shriveling fate. All these documents should be properly imaged, indexed and catalogued for the easy access of students and scholars of history, he said. He advised to put the entire material on the internet for its globalization and for its access
through search engines by the net-savvy scholars of history.

            Dr Manju Verma, on her part, has spent the money, sanctioned by the Vice-Chancellor in recovering and putting a new life to more than 100 precious pictures, paintings and 6,000 rare documents before installing them in the new library and museum. Besides, 6,000 book, photographs and paintings, the Department has a rich collection of around 260 files and journals, related to various historical movements. These projects, she said, were handled by such luminaries as Dr Fauja Singh, Dr Kirpal Singh, Shamsher Singh Ashok, Giani Randhir Singh and Giani Garja Singh.

            The Department also contains personal libraries, donated to it by such scholars as Barkat Rai Chopra, Prem Singh Hoti Mardan and Mehar Singh Rawel. It also has 99 publications brought our by the Department in English and Punjabi besides photo-albums of freedom fighters and national leaders related to Sikh history.

National Symposium on " Guru Granth Sahib: Global Sarokaars (concerns)"

Patiala, Mar 9 :Problems of the day like terrorism , climate warming and emerging political-economic upheavals are assuming monstrous proportion as the religious morality-- the groundswell of spiritualism --has failed to keep pace with advancement of science and technology, said Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice -Chancellor, Punjabi University , Patiala.  Speaking at the two-day national symposium on " Guru Granth Sahib: Global Sarokaars (concerns)" concluded at the university campus today, the Vice Chancellor said morality , embedded in spiritualism exerts a sobering impact on the human beings baser instincts like 'lust for power and pelf'  which otherwise get invariably sharpened and boosted with the advanced technology tending to  pamper the man's ego. The 'swelled head' of man is the cause behind all modern maladies afflicting the mankind world over, Dr Jaspal Singh added.

In this context, the Vice Chancellor said Sikhism transcends various barriers of caste and creed, inculcates 'a universal morality' among the human beings that could help resolving the ongoing science -sponsored confrontation between ' man and nature'. And, ' Gurbani' lays down a basis for developing a "composite culture' which could also eliminate the conflicts emerging and shaping around different cultural identities, he added.

The symposium, dedicated to the third centenary celebrations of Guru Granth Sahib has been jointly organized by the Departments of Guru Granth Sahib Studies and Guru Gobind Singh Religious Studies.

Inaugurating the symposium, eminent Sikh scholar Bhai Ashok Singh  Bagarian said the Sikh thinkers should strive to checkmate the overbearing influence of 'other religion' on the Sikhism and Sikh traditions.

Mrs Mohinder Kaur Gill , a noted writer on Sikh theology read out key note address highlighting that the Sikh scripture addresses all global concerns like scourge of terrorism, gender in-equality, Dalit repression, environmental problems and projects a universal ethos of co-existence and brotherhood.

Dr Gurnek Singh, head of Department of Guru Granth Sahib Studies said the Sikh scripture has a universal appeal and applicability in the modern age while Mrs Rajinder Kaur Rohi, head of Department of Guru Gobind Singh Religious Studies spoke about the relevance of Sikh ethos to social, economic and political problems of the day.

      Sikh scholars who participated in the symposium included Dr Jasbir Singh Sabar, Dr Jaswinder Kaur Dhillon, Dr Balwant Singh Dhillon, Dr Surjit Kaur Chahal and former SGPC secretary Gurbachan Singh Bachan.  Dr Jagbir Singh, Dr Gurnam Singh Sanghera, Dr Sashi Bala and Dr Dalvinder Singh Grewal.
       The scholars stressed the need of propagating the world over the spiritual, temporal ideals and way of truthful living enshrined in Sikh scripture to resolve sharp conflicts and contradictions developed in the modern polity and life.

Dr Maan gets offer from US company to make films on Punjabi folk games

Patiala, March 9- A US-based company, Eyedea Productions, engaged in the production of TV and film programmes for the South Asian community settled in North America and Canada, has sent an offer to Dr Gurmeet Singh Maan, Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Punjabi University, Patiala to produce series of documentary films on Punjabi folk games. The Eyedea Productions has made this offer to Dr Maan after watching two of his films on Punjabi folk games, “Peecho” and “Geete”, which he directed for the Electronic Multi Media Research Centre (EMMRC), Punjabi University for telecasting on national channel of Doordarshan under the UGC’s Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC) programme.

            In the letter of intent to Dr Maan, the President of the Eyedea Productions, Mr Harbaldeep Singh has said, “Recently, we came across two short films directed by you on the folk games of Punjab, Peecho and Geete . The way you have visually approached and treated these subjects in an
exclusive manner convinces us that these films have global audience. Also, these films are unique in a way that they not only depict hoary cultural heritage in a succinct manner but also show their relevance to the Punjabi women folk in a very subtle manner.” Eyedea Productions, Mr Singh continues, “would like to sign a letter of intent to produce 8-10 such like films of 25 minutes duration each for marketing and distribution to various TV channels. We at Eyedea Productions are very excited about this project and are looking forward to long mutual relationship.”

            Dr Maan, who also holds the additional charges of Director, Public Relations and Director, Media Centre of Punjabi University, said that the two films, Peecho and Geete were assigned to him by the then Director of the EMMRC, Dr Yogesh Gambhir with the objective of “preserving the rich cultural heritage of Punjab, embedded and woven deeply in these vanishing folk games, for the future generations. Based on the scripts of noted Punjabi writer,Kirpal Kazak, these games were visualized and given
directorial treatment from two angles--one, that these games led to the evolution of the modern games and second, that these were very intimately related to the real lives of Punjabi folk girls even till date,” he added. Symbolism, he said, has been used as a major tool to portray the quintessence underlying the philosophy of these two games. While accepting the offer, Dr Maan said that contrary to the requirements of the Eyedea Productions, the two films were of shorter duration. These films, therefore, will also have to be remade to come up with better quality on high-band digital cameras, he said.

ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਚਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਚੇਅਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਦਿਤੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਫੈਲੋਸ਼ਿਪ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਵਾਈਸ ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਤੇ ਡਾ. ਗੁਰਨਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਆਭਾਰੀ ਹਨ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਜੁਆਲਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਚੇਅਰ - ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਆਡੀਟੋਰੀਅਮ ਲਈ ਦੋ ਲੱਖ ਰੁਪਏ ਦੀ ਰਾਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਚੇਅਰ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਅਕਾਦਮਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿਣਗੇ ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਉਤਸਵ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਚੇਚੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੌਮਣੀ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਜਥੇਦਾਰ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਦੀ ਟਕਸਾਲੀ ਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਨਰ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦਾ ਵਡਾ ਹੱਥ ਹੈ । ਆਪ ਨੇ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਦਿਵਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੌਮਣੀ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕ ਕਮੇਟੀ, ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਲੋਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਜੈਕਟਾਂ ਲਈ ਹਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਰਹੀ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਵਾਈਸ ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਡਾ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਸਫਲਤਾਪੂਰਵਕ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਵਧਾਈ ਦਿੱਤੀ ।
 

ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ, ਵਾਈਸ-ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਨੇ ਜਥੇਦਾਰ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ - ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਉਤਸਵ ਵਿਚ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਲਈ ਜੀ ਆਇਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਉਤਸਵ ਲਈ ਕੀਤੇ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਦਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ । ਵਾਈਸ ਚਾਂਸਲਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਚੇਅਰ - ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਲੋਂ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਰ ਲਈ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਉਪਰਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾ ਕੀਤੀ ।

ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਭਾਈ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਿੰਘ, ਸਾਬਕਾ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਰਾਗੀ, ਸ੍ਰੀ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਐਵਾਰਡ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ, ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰ, ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਅਕੈਡਮੀ, ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਐਵਾਰਡ ਮਿਲਣ ਲਈ ਉਸਤਵ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ।

Gurmat Sangeet Utsav

Patiala, March 6- Noted kirtankaars regaled a large gathering through their recitation of Gurbani at the fifth Gurmat Sangeet Utsav at the Punjabi University campus here today with Vice Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh observing that 'sangeet' is  an integral part of Sikh traditions and vehicle of 'Sabad' enshrined in the Sikh scripture.
 
The kirtankaars rendered the Gurbani sabads composed in 31 'raags' in the Sikh scripture to the accompaniment to instruments like rabaab, saranda, tanti saaz and harmonium.
 
Padamashri awardee Surinder Singh of "Singh Bandhu" fame sang the Sabad in classical raags while eminent musician of Sikh lore Dr Gurnam Singh who is credited with reviving the traditional 'tanti saaz' rendered   'sabad' in melodious voice. Dr Gurnam Singh is winner of Gurmat Sangeet Award and Shiromani Raagi Purskar of 2001, instituted by the Punjab government.
 
Among the 16 noted kartankaars who gave their recital at the Utsav were Padama Shri awardee Nirmal Singh, Dr Jageer Singh ( Shiromani Raagi) , Sangeet Acharya Prof Kartar Singh , Bhai Amrik Singh Jakhami, Bhai Gurmit Singh Shaant, Bibi Jaswinder Kaur from Delhi, Bhai Gurdev Singh Phul from Canada ,Rabaabi Ali Bhai, Bhai Balbir Singh , Bhai Ravinder Singh, Bhai Sarabjit Singh, Bhai Inderjit Singh, Bhai Manohar Singh, Bhai Kultar Singh (all former Hazuri raagis)
 
The Utsav, an annual feature, was organized by the university in collaboration with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
 
The Punjabi University is the first one to accord full recognition to the traditional music of Punjab as well as to the 'Gurmat Sangeet'. Also, the university has set up a Gurmat Sangeet Chair and a separate Department of Gurmat Sangeet to study the musical traditions of the lore and to promote and propagate them.   
 
On this occasion Dr Jaspal Singh gave away special sangeet awards on behalf on the university to Bhai Nirmal Singh, Prof. Kartar Singh who is the Director of Gurmat Sangeet Academy. Vice-Chancellor announced fellowship to the Delhi-based 93 year old Raagi, Bhai Gurcharan Singh. The fellowship has been  granted by Gurmat Sangeet Chair which is being run in collaboration with Shri Guru Gian Parkash Foundation.
 
Several religious personality including Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and people from the surrounding areas attended the recital of the Gurbani. Classical instrument associated with traditional music like Tanpura, Jori, Mirdhang, Rabab and Swarmandal were put on the display.
 

 
Gurmat Sangeet Utsav

Patiala, March 5- The fifth Gurmat Sangeet Utsav, dedicated to the memory of third centenary celebrations of Guru Granth Sahib is being organized by the Punjabi University’s Department of Gurmat Sangeet in collaboration with Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee on March 6 on the University Campus. According to Dr Gurnam Singh, HoD of Gurmat Sangeet, noted kirtankaars will recite kirtan using string instruments in the presence of about five thousand Gurmat Sangeet lovers. While Bhai Gurcharan Singh will be awarded fellowship for the year 2009-09, other kirtankaars to be honoured during the occasion include Bhai Nirmal Singh and Prof Kartar Singh for their significant contribution in the field.

Rs three-lakh more for TV & Film Studio

Patiala, March 5- The TV and Film Studio of Punjabi University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication got enriched by another Rs three-lakh worth equipment, this time for the outdoor shooting purposes. The equipment to be purchased includes a high-end professional Canon XL-2 camera with 20x zoom, automated reflectors, a dolly, baby lights and a cordless transmitter. This equipment adds to the already installed indoor studio equipment worth more than Rs 20 lakhs, that includes three PD 170 cameras, NLE workstation, teleprompter, cool lights, baby lights, chroma cutter, audio mixer, and highly-sensitive microphones.

            While confirming the amount for the purchase of the outdoor shooting equipment, earlier released by him, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh said that “I want Punjabi University to be known by the first-of-its kind Media Centre and the Film City that we are going to create at a cost of Rs four crore on four acres of land. The Centre is supposed to be completed in the next 15 months, as tenders have already been floated in this regard”, he said. The Vice-Chancellor disclosed this while inaugurating a workshop on “Film Production and Film Appreciation”, being organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication in its preview-cum-seminar room for the students of Correspondence Course in Journalism  in addition to the Department’s own students of  MA and PG Diploma course in AV Production.

            The workshop, being conducted by an established film maker, Mr G.S. Chani, is aimed at exposing our students to the personal gains and experiences of renowned film makers, said Dr Gurmeet Maan, HoD of Journalism and Mass Communication. This is the second such workshop in a row as earlier one-week workshop on Film Production was conducted by another noted film maker, Mr Utpal Chowdhry two months back, he said.

             Mr Chani, who is a visiting faculty at Universities of Michigan, Toronto, Cambridge, Boston and FTII, Pune rated the Department’s TV and Film studio as ‘one of the very bests in Public Sector universities in the country’. Having made more than 50 documentary and short films on different genres, Mr Chani gave valuable tips to the students besides sharing his own experiences in the game of film making. He was accompanied by a famous story writer, Ms Kanha Singh on whose story, Khushboo”, Mr Chani has made a telefilm for Doordarshan.

ਦਵਾਈਆਂ ਖਾਸ ਕਰ ਫਾਰਮਾਸੂਟੀਕਲ ਸਾਇੰਸਜ਼ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਖੋਜ ਦਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਣ। ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੋਜ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਧੀਆ ਸਹੂਲਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਖੁਲ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਸਸਤੀਆਂ ਦਵਾਈਆਂ ਵਿਕਸਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ। ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਉਭਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਈ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ 'ਇਨੋਵੇਸ਼ਨ ਇੰਨ ਡਰੱਗ ਡਿਸਕਵਰੀ ਐਂਡ ਰਿਸਰਚ' ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਤੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਏ ਤਿੰਨ ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦਿਨ।
 

ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਸੰਬੋਧਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਜੈ.ਐਸ.ਐਸ. ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਮੈਸੂਰ ਦੇ ਉਪ-ਕੁਲਪਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਫਾਰਮਾ ਕਾਊਂਸਲ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਡਾ. ਬੀ. ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਵਧੀਆਂ ਉਤਪਾਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ, ਉਦਯੋਗ, ਖੋਜ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਕਾਦਮਿਕ ਅਦਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਵਧੀਆ ਤਾਲਮੇਲ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਂਝ ਹੋਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਜਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਇਹ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੱਧਰ ਤੇ ਲੋਕ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤਪਾਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਫਾਇਦਾ ਉਠਾ ਸਕਣਗੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੁਝਾਅ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਖੋਜਾਰਥੀ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਤ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਪਾਲਸੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ 'ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਹੈਲਥ ਅਲਾਇੰਸ' ਕਾਇਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
 

ਡਾ. ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਨੇ ਜੋਰ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਖੋਜਾਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਧੀਆ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਡਿਜੀਟਲ ਤਕਨਾਲੋਜੀ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ ਵੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਲੋਕ ਉਠਾ ਸਕਣ।

ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਉਪ-ਕੁਲਪਤੀ ਡਾ. ਜਸਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਨਵੀਆਂ ਵਧੀਆ ਦਵਾਈਆਂ ਘੱਟ ਮੁੱਲ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਟੀਚਾ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਰਾਲਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਪੂਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ
ਸੰਸਾਰੀਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਸਿਹਤ ਖੇਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਹੋਏ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਕਈ ਲਾਇਲਾਜ ਬਿਾਮਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਕੰਪਨੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਬਹੁ-ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਕੰਪਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨੇ ਹਾਲਾਤ ਹੋਰ ਮਾੜੇ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ। ਭਾਰਤ ਕੋਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿਰ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀ ਅਤ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਸੋਮੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਸਤੀਆਂ ਦਵਾਈਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਹਿਮ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਫਾਰਮਾਸੂਟੀਕਲ ਸਾਇੰਸ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਡਾ. ਏ.ਕੇ. ਤਿਵਾੜੀ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਵਿਤੀ ਵਰ੍ਹੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਕਰੋੜ ਰੁਪਏ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਦੀ ਗ੍ਰਾਂਟ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਏਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਹਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ 100 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਡੈਲੀਗੇਟ ਇਸ ਤਿੰਨ ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਲੈ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

Scientists should invent cheaper drugs for poor

Patiala, March 3- “Efforts in drug discovery and research, particularly in the field of pharmaceutical sciences, should be directed towards inventing drugs which a common man could easily afford. Teachers and scientists should be given optimum freedom and flexibility by the government to work and invent cheaper drugs, with infrastructure and other facilities made readily available to them.” This was the consensus evolved on the first day of the three-day national conference on “Innovations in Drug Discovery and Research” , being organized by the Punjabi University’s  Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Research at the Science Auditorium here today.

            Speaking on the occasion, Dr B. Suresh, Vice-Chancellor of the J.S.S. University, Mysore, and President of Pharmacy Council of India, said that a proper cooperation and coordination between the government, industry, research organization and academic institutions was necessary for producing quality works and products that could be used by large number of people. He advocated the idea of forming a national health alliance, controlled by researchers and scientists instead of government making policies to be followed by them. Dr Suresh also emphasized upon using the digital technology for propagating the research findings which could be used by maximum number of people instead of showing dithering about these to be copied by others.

            In his presidential address, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh said that the objective of providing new drugs with better efficacy at an affordable price could not be achieved without the combined efforts of scientists, coupled with government patronage. Globalization, he pointed out, has not spared even the health care sector and has rather led to the generation of many incurable diseases. Dr Jaspal Singh further said that strict regulations and ‘engulfing’ of pharmaceutical firms by the MNCs were making the things difficult for the Indian companies. India, however, was fortunate having been blessed with ample skilled manpower and natural herbal resources which could be exploited to the hilt by the pharmaceutical scientists for producing cheaper and more effective medicines for the poor patients. There was an immediate need of updating our knowledge and potential to strengthen our research inputs to fight it out at the global level, he said. He endorsed the idea of Dr Suresh to share individual expertise to devise a common pool of knowledge for the larger benefit of humanity.

            Dr A.K. Tiwari, HoD of Pharmaceutical Sciences disclosed that the department has received grants of more than Rs one crore from different national funding agencies during the current year. More than 100 delegates from different parts of the countries would be participating in different technical sessions, he said.
