Refresher course in law concludes at PU Patiala, May 31- A three-week refresher course in the subject of Law, conducted by the Punjabi University’s Academic Staff College (ASC) concluded on the University Campus here today. A total of 24 teachers from different colleges and universities from all over India participated in the course. Chief Guest on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh said that whereas these courses helped in enhancing and updating the knowledge of the participating teachers, these also helped in strengthening cultural ties among participants belonging to different cultural milieus. Prosperity and integrity of a country, he said, depends to large extent on the legal system prevailing in that country. Dr Singh also distributed certificates to the participating teachers.
HoD of Law and coordinator of the course, Dr Ravi Karan Singh said that the resource persons imparted knowledge to the participants especially in the fields of criminal law, labour law, consumer law and company law. Director of the ASC, Dr N.K. Dogra also addressed the participating teachers and thanked the Vice-Chancellor, who appreciated the functioning of the College. 
VC releases Rs 10-lakh grant for NSS activities Patiala, May 26- The NSS Department of Punjabi University organised its annual prize distribution function at the Science Auditorium of the university after a gap of 17 years here last evening. Vice-Chancellor of the university, Dr Jaspal Singh, who was chief guest on the occasion, ordered for the release of Rs 10 lakhs grant for 43 colleges for holding seven-day camps and for adopting villages to hold these camps in the areas of health, sanitation and personal hygiene.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor said that NSS volunteers should focus their efforts more towards generating awareness and educating the younger generation, especially among ruralites against the frowning menace of drug addiction. He saluted the spirit of social service among the NSS volunteers who were essaying to inculcate the spirit of national integrity, ethical and moral values among the people. He asked the NSS coordinators and programme officers to encourage more and more students to join the NSS campaign for widening the base of its activities to take the message of selfless service among the ‘written off’ categories of the society.
Dr Jaspal Singh honoured three Programme Officers of NSS, KK Jindal (Public College, Samana0, SK Uppal( Shanti Tara College , Mandi Ahmedgarh) and Varinder Joshi from Patel Memorial College , Rajpura with Lifetime Achievement Awards for their 32 years of service at the national and international levels in the field of NSS.
Dr Paramvir Singh, NSS Coordinator of Punjabi University, informed that the University’s NSS department had received a grant of Rs 60 lakhs from various funding agencies to organise workshops in the fields of disaster management and intellectual property rights. He further informed that they the NSS officials and volunteers have made concerted efforts to collect 5200 units of blood in the past one year during various blood donation camps.

Pbi varsity VC lays foundation stone of guest house Patiala, May 21- Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, laid the foundation stone of a guest house for the University’s Academic Staff College(ASC) on the premises of the Waris Bhawan of the University here today.
Speaking on the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor said that the UGC has sanctioned a total amount of Rs 75 lakhs to construct the guest house. Of this, a grant of Rs 40 lakhs has already been received by the University, while the remaining amount is likely to be released soon, he said. Earlier, while addressing the resource persons and participants in the four refresher courses being concurrently run by the ASC at the moment, Dr Jaspal Singh said that the University is likely to get Government-sponsored Centre for the Study of Disabilities. With this, the University will get the honour of being the only one in the state to have this centre. The UGC has earlier sanctioned a Centre for Women’s Studies with the objective of educating and empowering the women in the state, he added.
Chief Engineer, Mr A.J.S. Sandhu disclosed that the three-storey building of the guest house will have 36 rooms, a library, a dining and a common room. While 30 rooms will be reserved for the participants of the refresher and orientation courses, the remaining will be kept reserved for the resource persons, he said. Dr N.K. Dogra, Director of the ASC also spoke on the occasion. Among others, present on the occasion were Registrar, Dr Manjit Singh, Dean, Academic Affairs, Dr M.S. Saini, Dean, Students, Dr Kulbir Singh, and Provost, Dr Balwinder Tiwana. 
Dr Manjit Singh takes over as new Registrar of Punjabi University Patiala, May 3- Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, has appointed Dr Manjit Singh, Professor and Head of the Department of Social Work, and Dean, College Development Council, as new Registrar of Punjabi University. Dr Manjit Singh by taking over his new assignment replaces Dr S.S. Khehra.
With an excellent background in the fields of academics and scholarship, Dr Manjit Singh has many firsts to his credit. In his capacity as Dean Colleges, he played an instrumental role in getting a huge amount of UGC grant of Rs 37.60 crore for 51 affiliated colleges, getting affiliation to 40 new colleges and implementing semester system for professional courses in many of the colleges. All these are unprecedentedly record achievements by any DCDC. Recipient of Gold Medal and University colour, Dr Manjit Singh, during his 30-year stint as a teacher, has published four books and 15 research papers, besides completing 20 research projects. He has also chaired sessions and participated in five international and over 50 national seminars and conferences.
Dr Manjit Singh is currently a member of senates of Punjabi University and G.N.D.U., Amritsar, member State Appraisal Committee, Adoption Advisory Committee, Punjab, Member, Lok Adalat, Patiala, President, Rotary Club, Patiala Greater, and Executive Member, World Punjabi Centre. A large number of teachers, research scholars, students and members of the non-teaching staff congratulated Dr Manjit Singh on his elevation as Registrar.
