Fanaticism is against religion
Patiala, Nov 28- "The reigning regimes and rulers have
never tolerated thosemystics, saints, sages or gurus of
their times who have rebelled against their dictates,
the existing malpractices and the cult of fanaticism.
This was the reason that the fifth Sikh Master, Guru
Arjan Dev was mercilessly killed just two years after
having completed the work of editing of Guru Granth
Sahib." This was stated by Dr Jaspal Singh,
Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, while presiding
over a seminar on, "Shabd Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib"
at the University Neighbourhood campus at Karandi in
Mansa district late last evening. Guru Granth Sahib, he
said, was the only religious scripture which denounces
fanaticism and religious intolerance of other faiths,
religions and denominations, which was the foundation of
a pluralistic society like India. The so-called
spiritual leaders and rulers have always exploited the
innocent subjects coercing them to follow their paths
causing in the process a big damage to the real spirit
of religious ethos. Pbi varsity allows special chance of examination

Patiala, Nov 21- "Religious tolerance is a misnomer and
a wrong concept, having adopted many dubious
connotations about it. It means as if somebody is
compelled to 'tolerate' somebody or something
unwillingly. Religion in its real sense does not mean
only accepting and respecting others' religions but also
defending them at any cost. The real examples in this
respect are sacrifices made by Guru Tegh Bahadur and
Guru Gobind Singh, the ninth and tenth Sikh gurus." International Philosophy Day Celebrated Patiala, Nov. 20-With the financial assistance of Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR), the department of Religious Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala celebrated International Philosophy Day. Though, his Sangha was open for all, who were ready to join that as Buddhist Monk, without considering their caste and creed. In his lecture Dr. Edmund Weber highlighted the main aspects of Buddhism and its contribution to establish equality in the masses. He threw light on the ruling system of Ashoka as well. Exhibition of Paintings by Mr. Jagannath Kalia inaugurated Patiala, Nov. 13-The department of Fine Arts has organized an Exhibition of Paintings by Mr. Jagannath Kalia in the Fine Arts Gallery, Kala Bhawan, Punjabi University, Patiala. The works pertain to Indian classical music and Punjabi conventional culture which can be called reservoir of the original roots. A series of his paints represent records of the village, games, daily chores like sleeping, singing, dancing, cooking, attending guests and many other folk games and ways of life. Even the theme of education enhances the glory of the subject as to how the child grows and mother caters to the need of the child in a traditional way. The artist has very carefully presented Punjabi traditions which serve as thesaurus for the generations to come. Some of his works are in small format. In most of them he has drawn the sensitive figures holding traditional instruments like rebab, harmonium, tabla, ek tara and tanpura. The relationship of the figure and the instrument has been studied with deep vision and creative imagination particularly when we look at the instrument being held in the hand that vibrates when played. The 80 years old artist from Raikot District, Ludhiana had his tutelage from his father and grand-father. He adored a noted artist Bishan Das, a court artist of Jehangir and Shah Jahan, one of his relative. He had his education in Conservation and Restoration of old paintings from National Museum, New Delhi. He will be having his dialogue on Art with the art students and art lovers in the Department after the inauguration. The exhibition will remain open till 30th of November, 2007.

"Our education system has lost its purpose": Dr Manmohan Singh
Patiala, Nov 12- "Our education system is understood to
have lost its
purpose and direction. It has not only broken loose from
its moorings in the
value system, it is also not providing skills in any
thoughtful and planned
manner that the economy needs at present. The system is
in dire need of
planning, monitoring and coordination if it has to be
saved from its
impending doom. The growing indifference to values which
held the India
society together has already done incalculable harm top
national unity and
social progress." Punjabi University Campus steals the show in the Youth Festival

Money & muscle power need to be marginalised for fair elections
Patiala, Nov 11- "We need to make necessary amendments
in our constitution
to develop an India-specific model of democracy, given
its variegated
socio-cultural system. The existing loopholes need to be
plugged, paving way
for evolving a refined structure for the largest
democracy of the world."
This was the consensus that evolved on the opening day
of the two-day

India", organised by

Hall here today. Punjabi University wins Inter Zone Youth Festival Trophy Patiala, Nov 8- Participants and incharges of various Punjabi University Campus teams could not have asked for more on the eve of festival of lights, Diwali, that coincides with Nirvana day of Bhagwan Mahavir. Its participants in various events came up with flying colours by winning the Overall General Trophy in the Punjabi University Inter-Zonal Youth Festival that concluded at the University's Guru Tegh Bahadur Hall here this evening. Their competitors in various events help it amass 110 points to win the top position. The overall runners-up, Government Rajindra College, Bathinda were far behind with 28 points, while third position holders, Government Mohindra College, Patiala could muster only 20 points. Not only this, the Campus contingents created a history by winning the overall individual trophies in all the events of the festival that included Fine Arts (22 points), Dance (12 points), Music (42 points), Theatre (12 points) and Literary items (22 points). The Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Swarn Singh Boparai gave away the prizes. The only consolation for the one-time strong contenders in the festival, Government Brijindra College, Faridkot was that they clinched the overall trophy in the Folk Arts event. The event, however, is of ceremonial nature in the main youth festival as the University conducts separate Punjabi Folk Arts Festival every year. Talking about the importance of the Folk Art events, Mr. Boparai said that "holding of competition in these events helps in reviving the vanishing art forms. With little practice, the competitors in these items can further improve their skills to adopt them as highly lucrative and profit-yielding professions." Spare some Money to help the Underprivileged: Boparai
Invitation Card Inter Zone Youth Festival Patiala, Nov 6- "Let generosity be the hallmark of every individual's personality, coupled with willing acceptance of social obligations. The students who achieve material success in their lives should spare some money to help the underprivileged, especially those belonging to their alma maters." This was stated by Mr Swarn Singh Boparai, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, while inaugurating the three-day Punjabi University Inter-Zonal Youth Festival at the Guru Tegh Bahadur hall here today. He expressed his deep gratitude towards Mr. Ajit Singh Randhawa, an NRI from the USA, who has donated 25,000 US dollars for the engineering students, studying at Yadavindra College of Engineering, Talwandi Sabo under Punjabi University's Golden Heart Scholarship Scheme. Giving example of Rockefeller, the Vice-Chancellor said that he could establish the Rockefeller Foundation simply by sparing 10 per cent of his daily income. He encouraged the students to emulate him for serving the humanity. Mr Boparai said that it was for the first time that more than 1,000 students are participating in the festival, which was almost double than the previous years, as the number of zones and participating teams has been increased to ensure maximum participation. According to changed rules two top teams, instead of one, from each zone in each event will be vying for top honours in the festival. Secondly, the number of zones has also been increased to six with the addition of Mansa and Fatehgarh Sahib Zones.Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sunita Dhir, Director, Youth Welfare of the University, said that the enhanced participation would provide us with the scope of choosing the best talent for participation in the North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival to be held at Kanpur from December 1 to 5. Another new feature added to this year's festival is the holding of competition in the Punjabi folk items like making and knitting of pakhian, bagh, phulkari, nale, rasse, chhikoo, tokrian, chhiklian, sewian and wall paintings (November 7), and guddian patole, innu, prandian, khidoan, pidhian and clay modelling on November 8. This has been done to revive, sustain and promote Punjabi folk culture," she added. Hosts University Campus and Government College of Physical Education, patiala were declared joint first in the Gidhha competition held today. Government Rajindra College, Bathinda and S.D. Kanya Mahavidyalaya were declared second and third, respectively. Guru Nanak College, Budladha finished fourth.
