Patiala, Sept 17- Punjabi University, Patiala,has decided to relax the qualifying marks secured by students in the entrancetest, conducted by the University on September 4 for admission to M.Phil.Courses in various departments of the University. Stating this, Dean, AcademicAffairs, Dr S.S. Tiwana said that the candidates, who had appeared in theentrance tests, are advised to consult the concerned heads of department onSeptember 21 at 10 a.m. for further details.

VC inaugurates hotel management dept

Patiala, Sept 17- Punjabi University’sVice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh today inaugurated the newly created Departmentof Tourism, Hospitality and Hotel Management on the University campus heretoday. The function was marked by preparation and serving of quality eatables bythe students themselves. The Department has been presently located in theUniversity’s cafeteria as a makeshift arrangement and will be finally shifted toits new building, which is likely to be completed by end of this semester,according to its Director, Dr S.M. Verma. As many as 24 students have takenadmission in the course, Dr Verma said.

Pbi varsity's media students leave for Commonwealth Games

Patiala, Sept 17- A contingent of 50 students,including 11 girls, of Centre for Advanced Media Studies (CAMS) pursuing theirB.Tech. course in TV, Film Production and Media Technology at PunjabiUniversity, Patiala, will leave for New Delhi tomorrow to be part of the PressOperations team of Commonwealth Games. The team will be led by CAMS Director, DrGurmeet Singh Maan, accompanied by other members of the faculty. With this,Punjabi University’s Centre for Advanced Media Studies has attained theexclusive distinction of becoming the only Centre in the region whose studentshave been picked by the Commonwealth Games Media Committee to be a part of thesecond biggest sports event in the world.

These students have been selected by a high-powered Media Committee team of theCommonwealth team, led by its DDG, Mr Manish Kumar to perform media-relatedtasks such as media liaisoning, media coordination and event management. Theywill undergo a two-week training workshop to be conducted by the Media Committeein the Media Centre of the CWG located at Pragati Maidan prior to their takingup the assigned tasks.

Earlier, while interacting with these students in the Media Centre of theUniversity, Mr Tarlochan Singh, M.P. and Chairman of the Media and PublicityCommittee for the CWG, said that “It will be a big exposure for the students asthey will get the momentous chance of interacting with 700-odd top brass Indianand foreign media persons. Feeling elated with the exceptional achievement ofthe CAMS, Vice- Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh promised every help to the Centre tofurther strengthen and promote its activities. National seminar on “Distance Education: Challenges in the New Millennium begins

Patiala, Sept 14- The two-day national seminar on“Distance Education: Challenges in the New Millennium”, being organised byPunjabi University’s Department of Distance Education of Punjabi university, gotunderway in the University’s senate Hall here today.

In his presidential address, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh said that distanceeducation has a big role to play in dissemination of knowledge in view of vastlychanging demographic profiles of students both at the undergraduate andpostgraduate levels. Its role, he said, has become more important since centresof high standing are very few in numbers, even as they are located mostly inmetropolises. As a result of this, access to higher education, both in rural andurban areas, stands denied to the common populace, he said. There has been aparadigm shift in learning as education has become learner-centric and theemphasis has shifted from the earlier pedagogical authoritarianism of theteacher to student autonomy centering around specific needs of the students, DrSingh added.

Dr M.L. Ranga, Vice-Chancellor of GNJ University, Hisar, said that we need toredefine our distance education system keeping in mind the fact that around 80per cent of our population is living in the countryside and 50 per cent of themare illiterate. He emphasised upon using a mixer of conventional and latesttechnological tools and gadgets for imparting education through distancelearning mode. Dr Tejinder Kaur, Professor of English and HoD of DistanceEducation, said that opportunities for formal education are scarce and thinlyspread. These need to be supplemented by distance education system to takeeducation to the learners’ doorstep instead of compelling students to throng theteaching institutions.

Dr S.P. Malhotra, Professor of Education at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhidiscussed different challenges being faced by teachers of distance education,which includes meeting specific needs of students as they relatively remainstrangers to each other. Dean, Academic Affairs, Dr S.S. Tiwana traced thehistory and significance of distance education in view of changing perception ofstudents and their parents.

Counselling for Pbi varsity M.Ed. admissions begins on September 20

Patiala, Sept 13- Punjabi University, Patiala,will conduct first counselling for M.Ed. regular admissions for the session2010-11 in Punjabi University and affiliated colleges for 280 seats fromSeptember 20 to 22. As many as 2,200 candidates had appeared in the entrancetest conducted by the University for these admissions.

According to the Coordinator and Co-Coordinator, Dr Meenakshi Sharma and DrKirandip Kaur, the counselling will be held in the Department of Education ofthe University for every category of admission seekers. Counselling, however,will not entitle a candidate for admission as it will be made purely on thebasis of merit for available seats in each category, they said.

While counselling for the general category will be held on September 22 starting10 a.m., it will be conducted for the SC, ST, BC and OBC categories on September20. September 21 has been reserved for counselling for the remaining categorieswhich include sportspersons, backward areas, border areas, disabled persons,widows, divorced women, children, widows of defence personnel and paramilitaryforces, wards of political suffers, freedom fighters, terrorist affected andriot victims. Syndicate hails Media students' selection for C' wealth Games

Patiala, Sept 11- A meeting of the PunjabiUniversity syndicate, held under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor, Dr JaspalSingh, approved the signing of memoranda of understanding by the University withSan Jose State University, USA, Directorate of Mushroom Research, Solan andAmerican Institute of Indian Studies, New Delhi. The syndics placed on recordtheir special appreciation for 50 students of University’s Centre for AdvancedMedia Studies, pursuing B.Tech. in TV, Film Production and Media Technology fortheir selection to perform media tasks during the forthcoming CommonwealthGames. It was rated as the exclusive distinction of the University for its MediaCentre being the only Centre in the region whose students have been picked bythe Commonwealth Games Media Committee to be a part of the second biggest sportsevent of the world. The members also applauded the distinct achievement of theUniversity for scoring a hat trick by winning the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophyin sports for the third consecutive year, establishment of Women’s Study Centreand Academic Staff College.

The syndicate also gave its nod to enhance the honorarium to the meritoriousstudents from the existing Rs 250 to Rs 500 per month. The appointments of DrChandan Singh and Dr S.P. Singh as Dean, Research and Additional Dean, Researchwere also approved. It also approved the Standing Committee for the developmentof Punjabi up to June 30, 2011.

Radio has survived notoriety of linguistic pollution: VC

Patiala, Sept 11- “Radio has successfullysurvived the notoriety of linguistic pollution which is now becoming an integralpart of the visual and audio-visual media. That’s how and why it is staging acomeback in a big way salvaging itself from the clutches of Television, whichonce was thought to be a potential danger to its existence. ” This was stated byDr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala, while presidingover the valedictory function of the four-day workshop on “Radio Programming andProduction Techniques” , conducted by Punjabi University’s Centre for AdvancedMedia Studies (CAMS) on its premises here today.

Radio, Dr Jaspal Singh said, still enjoys the same sanctity, credibility andreliability in the minds of its audience as it did decades ago before the adventof Television due to quality of its content, reach and magnitude. He cautionedthe students of CAMS pursuing their B.Tech. in TV, Film Production and MediaTechnology and PG Diploma in Audio- Visual Production courses against theonslaught of vulgarity being nurtured by a section of the print and electronicmedia.

Director, CAMS, Dr Gurmeet Singh Maan, said that the major objective of holdingthe workshop was to expose the students to the programming, creative andtechnical aspects of Radio broadcasting. The students made a 15-minute programme,under the guidance of Mr Waraich which was broadcast on AIR, Patiala onSeptember 9, alongwith a 10-second promo on “Punjabi University Kitab Ghar”, hesaid. The Centre has planned to hold another workshop on “Cinematography andFilm Direction” by The Centre is also starting online Radio and onlineTelevision with the help of University’s Computer Centre, Dr Maan added.

Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor pleads law students' case with Bar Councilof India

Patiala, Sept 9- Punjabi University, Patiala, through its Vice-Chancellor, DrJaspal Singh has, in a communiqué, pleaded the Chairman of the Bar Council ofIndia to “include Punjabi in the languages in which the All India BarExamination (AIBE) is to be conducted and the preparatory material provided” tosave the careers of students, who have obtained or pursuing their law degrees inPunjabi medium, from getting jeopardised.” Earlier, a large number of studentshave submitted a representation to the Vice-Chancellor to take necessary stepsfor taking up the issue on their behalf with the concerned authorities.

Expressing his astonishment at the move of excluding Punjabi as a medium for theAIBE, the Vice-Chancellor has stated that “Punjabi is one of the languagesspecified in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, and, therefore,cannot be ignored for any purpose for which the other regional languages areallowed at the national level.” Surprisingly, the UPSC allows the use of Punjabialongwith other Indian languages in the prestigious Civil Services Examination.Further, the law degrees of Punjabi University are duly recognised by the BarCouncil of India, he said. More bewildering is the fact that other regionallanguages such as Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali, Gujarati and Oriya have beenallowed to use as a medium of examination for the AIBE.

Dr Jaspal Singh has further stated that even the Punjab Legislative Assembly hasadopted Punjabi as the official language of the State for all purposes inaccordance with Article 345 of the Constitution and also notified as thelanguage for use in the subordinate courts in Punjab. The move to omit Punjabifrom the languages for the AIBE, he said, will adversely affect the interest ofthe candidates who have obtained their degrees in the Punjabi medium. Punjabi,therefore, is needed to be included in the languages in which the All India BarExamination (AIBE) is to be conducted and the preparatory material provided sothat careers of the students, who have obtained or who are pursuing their lawdegrees in Punjabi medium may not be jeopardised.”

Workshop on kathak dance concludes

Patiala, Sept 8- An eight-day workshop on kathak dance, organised by the PunjabiUniversity’s Dance Department concluded in the kala bhawan here today. Theworkshop, conducted by Guru Harish Gangani of Jaipur Gharana ended withperformances by the students of B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. classes of the dancedepartment and by Mr Gangani himself.

While presiding over the function Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh said that therich cultural heritage of Indian classical dances was not getting its duerecognition in Punjab as its musical map was being dominated by the popularmusic. He asked the faculty members to undertake research projects in additionto teaching the students to carry forward this hoary tradition of our country.“Respecting art, he said, is equal to respecting God, he said. Dr Daisy Walia,HoD of dance disclosed that a total of 48 students participated in the workshop.

Workshop on Radio Programming begins at CAMS

Patiala, Sept 7- A four-day workshop on “Radio Programming and ProductionTechniques”, being organised by the Punjabi university’s Centre for AdvancedMedia Studies (CAMS) got underway at its premises here today.

While inaugurating the workshop, Registrar, Dr Manjit Singh highlighted the roleof media, especially radio, in transforming societies both in the developing aswell as developed nations. Given its reach, magnitude and quality of programmes,no other medium can match radio in bringing societal change, he said. Afterhaving remained eclipsed for a while with the advent of television, it hasstaged a comeback with a bang, particularly with the beginning of era of FMradio broadcasting, Dr Singh added

Dr Gurmeet Singh Maan, Director, CAMS, said that the major objective of holdingthis workshop was to familiarise the students with the technological aspects,along with programming and production techniques of radio broadcasts. The focusof the four-day workshop will on radio jockeying and anchoring, internet radio,community radio, podcasting, future of FM radio and job openings in radioworking under the private and public broadcasting systems. After spending fourdays, the students will be exposed to practically training in the the radiostations of BIG FM and AIR, Patiala, Dr Maan said.

Dr Jaspal Singh lays emphasis on value-based management system

Patiala, Sept 4- A two day international seminar on “New Paradigms in ManagementTheory and Practice”, being organised by Punjabi University’s School ofManagement Studies, in collaboration with Punjab Commerce and ManagementAssociation (PCMA), got underway at the Senate Hall here today.

The seminar chief guest, Mr Mandeep Singh Sandhu, Principal Secretary Higher
Education, laid emphasis on quality education to develop new perspectives andmanagerial competencies to run a country of one billion people. He said that weneed to apply principles of management and knowledge to save our environment,adding that the managerial potential of today’s youth is sure to developsolutions for our nation’s problems, especially in the areas of food and watermanagement.

Dance workshop begins at Punjabi University

Patiala, Sept 1- An eight-day dance workshop, being organised by the PunjabiUniversity’s Dance Department, got underway at the University’s kala Bhawan heretoday. Dr S.S. Tiwana, Dean, academic affairs, inaugurated the workshop. HoD, DrDaisy Walia disclosed that 48 students of B.A. Honours and master’s course areparticipating in the workshop being conducted by the internationally famousdanseur of Jaipur Gharana, Mr Harish Gangiani. He will train the students onsubtleties of Kathak dance, Dr Walia said. The students will give a presentationon the concluding day of the workshop on September 8. Vice-chancellor, Dr JaspalSingh will be the chief guest on the occasion, she added.
