Date of Establishment of the Department: 1963

Brief History of the Department

Chemistry department is one of the first three departments with which Punjabi University started in 1963. In the beginning the department started functioning with specializations in organic, inorganic and physical chemistry and with the passage of time analytical and biochemistry specializations were also introduced. In the year 1974, M.Sc. in Forensic Science and in 1987 M.Sc. in Environmental Technology and Management were also started in the chemistry department. The biochemistry specialization and forensic science section have now been developed into full fledged and independent departments of Biotechnology and Forensic Science respectively. The Department is UGC-SAP (DRS-1) and DST-FIST assisted. The Ministry of Environment, Government of India has recognised the department for the pollution control and environmental analysis. At present, the department is offering inorganic, organic and physical chemistry specializations to M.Sc. and M.Phil. students.

VI. INFRASTRUCTURE FACILITIES

The department has a spacious three storeyed building. It has separate fully equipped classrooms, teaching and research laboratories for each of the specialization. Apart from this, there is a centralized instrumentation laboratory which is equipped with the research instruments like GC-MS, Spectrofluorimeter, UV-Visible spectrophotometer, FTIR spectrophotometer and NMR spectrometer, etc.

Two Computer Laboratories

The Department has a well established Computer Laboratories which are equipped with a total of 20 computers including a server. In these labs Internet facility is free for all students and research scholars. With this lab the following staff members are associated :

VII ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

1. A two-day National Seminar on “Recent Trends in Chemistry”, was organized by the Department on 21^st & 22^nd Jan., 2009. Six Invited talks including the Key-note address by Prof. A.S. Brar, Vice-chancellor of Lucknow University, were delivered and more than 70 research papers were presented.

2. Pharmaceutical companies and Chemical Industries regularly visit our Department for Campus Placement.

3. Prof. N.R. Dhamiwal were invited by Punjab academy of sciences to act as sectional president and judge for the young scientist award during the conference organized by Guru Nanak Dental College, Sunam and Thapar University, Patiala.

Prof. N.R. Dhamiwal has been a member of UGC expert committees for 11^th plan assessment, College of Potential Excellence, for granting autonomous status to the colleges in Orissa and granting financial assistance for attendinf International Conferences abroad.
Dr Jaspreet Singh has been invited at SRI International, USA to work as Visiting Scientist (2005-08). He has got 7 US patents filled on the basis of work done during his stay in USA.
One Scientist and one Research Scholar from Germany visited the Department in 2009 for collaborative research with Dr. Ashok Kumar Malik.
Dr. Raman K. Verma is carrying out collaborative research with Ind-Swift Laboratories Limited, Mohali, on “DESIGN SYNTHESIS AND COMPUTATIONAL VALIDATION OF MEDICINALLY SIGNIFICANT NEW CHEMICAL ENTITIES (NCEs)”
