Department History
The I.A.S. & Allied Services Training Centre, Punjabi University, Patiala, is one of the leading
Institutions of Northern India. It imparts training for the Central Civil Services I.A.S. (Prelim. & Main),
P.C.S. Judicial (Prelim. & Main), P.C.S. (Executive), B.D.P.O., D.S.P (Prelim. & Main), P.O. (Banking
Services), N.E.T. (U.G.C.), B.Ed., LL.B. (3 years Course), LL.B. (5 years Course), Spoken English and
T.E.T. (Teacher Eligible Test) Examinations. It was established in 1988 and was attached to the PreExamination Training Centre for Competitive Examinations (Ministry of Social Justice and
Empowerment, Government of India & Ministry of Minority Affairs, New Delhi) for Weaker Sections
(Including Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes and Minorities i.e. Sikhs, Muslims, Christians,
Bodhis and Zoroastrians) which has been conducting the above stated (except state level) courses and
functioning successfully since 1970. Both the Centres complement each other in their operational
functioning. Over the entire span of its existence, the Institute has acquired not only the basic
infrastructure, expertise and innovative techniques but also a fair reputation for its pioneering good
work and singular achievements
Location
The Institute is located at the Punjabi University Campus Patiala and the walking distance from the
main gate of the university. It consists of Director’s Office, Class Rooms, Seminar Hall, Counselling
Room, Teaching Material Room and Library. The University Campus is situated on the PatialaChandigarh Road, at a distance of 7 KM from the main city. It presents a splendid sight of beautiful
buildings away from noise and din of city markets and roads.

The Centre aims to create an inclusive learning space that prepares students for various competitive
examinations with confidence and clarity. Its purpose is to guide aspirants toward careers in public
service by offering structured coaching, academic support and mentorship that meet the demands of
exams such as UPSC, PCS and other allied services. The Centre is committed to widening access for
students from weaker sections and underprivileged backgrounds by providing affordable training, needbased assistance and opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. It works to bridge educational
gaps through foundation courses, remedial learning and personal guidance, ensuring that every

Performance Profile-Achievements of the Institute
In its relatively short but promising span of three decades, the Institute has provided coaching and
guidance to thousands of students preparing for various Civil and Defence Services examinations. With
consistent dedication, it has supported candidates from all categories and states, offering them training
and direction. Students benefit from a clear strengthening and broadening of knowledge through the
Institute’s high-quality instruction.
The Centre has emerged as a leading institution in this region, attracting career-focused candidates from
Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and remote areas of Himachal Pradesh. Its
achievements, outlined below, reflect its strong reputation in this field.
- Central Civil Services: 200+ trainees of the Centre have been selected for Central Civil Services. In
the recent selections, the Centre saw exceptional results, with several trainees securing top ranks. These
include Ankur Garg (1st ), Amit Singla (13th ), Sanjay Goel (28th ), Aman Puri (33rd ), and Monika
Sharma (107th) Other successful candidates include Rohi Gupta (31st ), Dhanpreet Kaur (62nd ), Kunal
Aggarwal (113th ), Mandeep Singh Randhawa (129th ), Balwinder Singh (627th ), Vikaramjeet Singh
Duggal (124th) and Sunpreet Singh (170th ).
- P.C.S. (Judicial) (Course started in 1995): About 150 trainees from the Centre have been selected
for PCS (Judicial) till date. The Centre’s trainees have consistently dominated the merit lists in the
recent examinations, with selection ratios of 48/54, 15/19, 12/15, 7/8 and 17/21. The toppers in these
examinations: Priya Sood, Arun K. Gupta, Arun Aggarwal, Amol Gill and Ram Saran Modi were also
trained here. Other high-ranking candidates include Amit Thind (2nd), Poonam Bansal (3rd),
Vipandeep Kaur (5th), Ashish Abrol (7th), Manila Chugh (9th), Gurpartap Singh (10th), Mohit Bansal
(14th), Shikha Bansal (16th), Jasbir Kaur (21st), Amrinderpal Singh (23rd), Amit Kumar Arya (28th),
Vikaramjit Singh (29th), Kamalvarinder (31st) and Vishesh (35th). Additional successful candidates from later years include Jagbir Singh Mehndiratta (7th), Rajinder Singh Nagpal (10th, OBC), Dipti
Goyal (12th), Manny Arora (27th), Himanshi Galhotra (31st), and others such as Supreet Kaur, Komple
Dhanjal, Geeta Rani, Krishnanuja Mittal and Sumukhi. The Centre is a premier institution in Northern
India that offers specialised training for practising lawyers preparing for the Judicial Services
Examination.
- H.C.S. (Judicial) Course started in 1995: Around a dozen trainees from the Centre have been
selected for H.C.S. (Judicial) so far. In the most recent examination, all seven trainees who appeared
qualified. The topper, Jasbir Singh, was a trainee of the Centre. Anudeep Kaur secured the 3rd rank,
and Amaninder Singh was also selected.
- P.C.S. (Executive): About 60 candidates from the Centre have been selected for P.C.S. (Executive)
to date. In the latest selection, 41 out of 91 selected candidates, including the second-rank holder
Sandeep Rishi, had received training at the Institute.
- M.B.A. / M.C.A. / M.F.C. / M.B.E. : Course started in 1997: So far, about 220 trainees from the
Centre have been admitted to these programmes.
- N.E.T. (U.G.C.) (Course started in 1998): more than 50 candidates have passed this Examination in
different disciplines in recent year.
- B.Ed. Entrance Test: more than 30 trainees got admission in B.Ed. Colleges.
- LL.B. Entrance Test: around 50 candidates got admission in Universities and Law Colleges in both
3- and 5-year courses.
